Swedish Boats worth waiting for? A lot of people think so and this might help you see why.

Went over to Sweden yesterday on a spare ticket. Wow, what a day!
Long… 4:30 am start, arrived home 11:30 but worth it.

Nice People, Nice places, Nice views, Nice boats and a Nice philosophy!

I added loads of pictures to let you see what you’re in for from both ‘WestLine’ Boats and ‘Nord West’. We were lucky enough to shown around the Nord West Factory by Johan Stubner, their Sales Manager.

These people have got their act together making one complete high quality boat every week. It was also nice to see the actual boat that will be at Sibs just being prepared for shipping to.

The message from the day if you go to Sweden for me anyway was:

Don’t worry about the quality, it’s included and in some cases, even I thought they had gone over the top.

But how’s this? I didn’t see it so much as go and buy a Swedish boat but ‘Go and have one made for you!’

First ‘Westline’ which is what we went to see…

When the W34 first appeared, it was really flying with a super engine roar. At over 30 knots, it was eased into a typical Westline ‘Bank’ed turn! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Then we took her out and saw some great views and really took her through her paces. The W24 went straight up to 34 knots with 5 people on board! Not really surprising I thought with a good chunky pair of D4's or similar. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Nope, this one had a single D6 350Hp with outdrive! Hmmm. Why would you want a twin? Twice the expense, weight, fuel. "There's food for thought," I mumbled. especially as I have several friends that cross the channel on single engined boats quite happily.

So thinking that was great what next? A trip back to the factory to see the production and to discuss some minor layout changes to fittings and the saloon before leaving but we were quite wrong!

We ended up here next.

This rear anchoring system is very popular in Sweden, there are no tides to allow for and usually people head forwards towards rocky inlets keeping their props clear and then step off over the open pulpit rail.

NordWest10.jpg

The large holes in the floor for the IPS drives are surprisingly large if you've not seen them.

Johan was very proud of the sub assembly system and you can see how they get everything in and fitted so neatly. Each system like the hydraulics for trim tabs, lazerette lift or eberspacher heating is separately mounted on a board and pre wired prior to fitting into the boat.

And sitting outside was this little beauty. I’m sorry but photos couldn’t do justice to the level of finish on this 29’ Vindo built just next door.

And not to mention a special ‘Chris Craft’

After the great tour of Nord West we went on to the much smaller Westline yard.

Nice quaint country location next to an orchard. After scrumping a few apples, discussions followed and we went round to see a few guys hard at work laying up even though they were supposed to be on holiday.

Thanks to Jez, Westline and Nordwest for a really interesting and enjoyable day trip. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Shelley and i are really warming to Swedish boats. One on my hit-list to view at SIBS is the Nimbus Nova 30S and the 300R if they have it...

Fab pics by the way, i still have to get my head around the Westie 24s layout, in a couple of weeks time i guess i'll have that opportunity!

Great pictures Roger - I wish I could have made it! Particularly as my day was thrown by the fact that the course I was running could not go ahead due to "technical" problems with the boat! I'll not post why on here, but it was an "interesting" day!!

I can't wait to see the "34" in her glory - looks great on the pics and you certainly had a good day for it.

Just have to confirm your suspicions, the boating in Scandinavia is great, having done boating is the Southwest of the UK, which is very pleasant when the weather is good, its still not a patch on boating here, thousands of destinations, islands, bays and coves to hideaway in. Next to no tides so you can sleep all night without worrying about the ropes, enough water for everyone, and a great relationship between raggies and mobos.
Whereas in the Uk its shall we go left or right when we leave the harbour, or just head out to the horizon, it gets a bit boring after some years IMHO, whereas I have been here for 12 yrs and am still finding new places within 1hr of where I live.

Scandinavian boats have always been amongst the best, Flipper, Nimbus, Storboro etc so no surprise to see the tradition continuing. Good looking well put together practical boats.

Roger,

That is Brilliant reviewing. Those Scandis sure know how to make a boat don't they. I think it is hard to comprehend the Quality until you have owned one!

That Westline facitory looks very new! Nice and claen and organised as well. Love your thoughts on the single D6...I would get that one as well!

Brilliant and I hope Jez had fun! Jez, have you any more pictures please???

Cheers

More pics of the Nord West factory

Glad you enjoyed the day Roger. I am totally shattered this morning but I think it was worth it /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif.

It was very good of Nord West to show us around, baring in mind we turned up unannounced. They make one boat a week (40 per year) and the factory is a warren of little rooms and corridors, it is amazing they get that many done. They reckon on average 12 find their way to the UK, which at nearly 30% of production is quite a lot with no dealer.

Anyway, a few more pics from the Nord West factory:

Re: More pics of the Nord West factory

Hi Moody,

I think (know) there is bigger stuff planned, but the focus now is getting the W23/W24/W34 production up and running to maximum capacity. There is a new (much bigger) factory due at the end of 2008/early 2009 which is when a larger model is likely to be viable. Next project is a hard top for the 34 and possibly a boat to bridge the gap between the 24 and 34.

Brilliant.
Very interesting . Good piccies and Verbals.
These type of Posts are Great.
Thanks Roger.
That 29' Vindo, that would do for Me.
"Vindo" Make or Model?
Not heard of Those/That before.
What have I missed?

I have managed to get a couple of my Nokia. I know most didn't like the blood red leather seen on another 34, so here is a couple of picks to prove we can do toned down colours!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I spent a day with her in doors at Nordwest last december and got very close to Buying a Nordwest 420 including a seatrial and facdtory visit.

We have friends with a Nordwest 390 which is a very capable boat, superbly thought out and well finished.

The 420 is well thought out, a great finish and superb performance and will stand up well to any uk built 40 ft boat and it has better sleeping arangements for a family than any uk equivalent.

Although I bought something completely different I am afn of Nordwest.

The boat is made in a small facility next to the Nord West yard, which is in Vindon (two .. over the o of Vindon), the region is Hanan in Sweden. Looks like very small production and hand built, may be none for sale and probably no web site
