Swashway - Origin of the word

I know where there are many and know what they are. However, my Australian friend wants to know the origin of the word.
Any ideas?

OED suggests the verb means making the sound of washing or rising and falling water, the noun means the motion or sound of swashing water. Origin seems to be imitative.
