I recently purchased a bukh dv24 with a sail drive . Ive removed the sail drive and would like to use my Bukh DV20 BW 6 gear box I realize the BW 6 gear ratio is 2.5 and not 3 which the DV24 used but would like to use the original bukh DV 20 BW6 gear box behind the DV24 .
Can any one tell me it there's a physical problem in doing this . It appears other than changing the mounting bolts on the bell housing to suit the bw 6 it appears it will fit /
Any ideas on this matter appreciated

Any ideas on this matter appreciated

In case some one else want to do such a conversion the BW6 gear box fit fine on the back of the Bukh DV24. Im now adding a heat exchanger to obtain a higher operating temp for the engine and also for a boat hot water system

You didn't get much help from the forum but I'm glad it worked out for you.

Its not some thing that is done I guess but thought it a nice idea to put it on the net as some of the Bukh DV 24's will start popping up for sail now and then .I'm about to fit fresh water cooling to mine now hoping to obtain a little better operating temp and add a hot water service to the boat . winter down south in Victoria Aust so cant finish off my hull paint idle minds turn into other things while you wait :-)

Bukh Service Information SI0203 gives guidance on replacing a DV20 with a DV24

http://bukh.dk/upload_dir/docs/FAQ/Bukh RME - Data/Bukh RME - Service Information/SI0203_2.pdf

The DV24 comes with a 3:1 gearbox, whilst the DV20 had a 2.5:1. Bukh's advise is that in some cases one might consider using a 2.5:1 gearbox if the existing prop is to be used again. The engine may not be able to run at 3600rpm, but many customers will enjoy cruising at e.g.2700 and consider this to be an attractive option.

I have replaced the DV20 with a DV24 on my Westerly Konsort and opted to keep the original 2.5:1 gearbox and prop. When motor sailing I run at 2,000 for most of the time. I have never felt the need to increase the revs to anything like the 3600 which the DV24 should provide.

I realise this is now quite an old thread, but I'm doing something similar. I've purchased a DV24 with 3:1 BW7 gearbox and am replacing my DV20 which is connected to a Bukh saildrive. I need to keep the saildrive.

I haven't yet removed the BW7 from the DV24, but the different layout of the bolts/studs on the bell housing to suit the saildrive / BW7 is clear. I assume it is a simple job to change the stud layout (alternative theaded holes already exist in the bell housing?). But would be very grateful if someone could confirm.

The other problem I can already foresee is that my DV20 has an old-school Bukh/VDO tachometer which has a sensor on the bell housing. The DV24 has no such sensor. I am assuming that transferring my old sensor to the new engine would be problematic and would love to know how others have solved this. I assume that moving to a new tacho which connects to the alternator is the way to go?

Finally, I need to find new engine mounts as the ones I have are shot. My engine mounts (between DV20 and saildrive bed) look exactly like the ones in the OP's photos. Does anyone know where I can obtain replacements? (I am also in Victoria, Aust).

Sorry for all the questions in one post. Hoping that someone who has been there before me can help solve them all for me :)

Thanks in advance.

Hi

Bukh engine mount discussion here:

http://www.ybw.com/forums/showthrea...unts-for-Bukh-24&highlight=bukh+engine+mounts

Bukh UK & French Marine can supply genuine mounts (both have web sites), not sure if they post to Oz

Thanks for the Link RivalRedwing. I had found that, but these are not standard Bukh engine mounts. The distance between mounting bolts is 90mm, not approx 76mm as I believe is the case for the standard Bukh mounts. I'm not sure if this is an Australian thing, but my DV20 (with saildrive) is mounted in exactly the same fibreglass engine bed as shown in the OP's photo, using what appears to be exactly the same engine mounts. This made me hope that maybe it was some kind of a standard mount.

I'm talking with the two companies mentioned in the post you linked (Robush and AV Mounts) to see what they can suggest.

Thanks for your suggestion.
