Swapping a Navman 5500 with a 6500 - GPS Antenna compatibility - existing antenna cable is SMA, the 6500 input is LT8...

Can’t believe they will be compatible. The Co-ax will be sending a raw signal whereas the multi pin will be doing some processing with electronics first.
Ah, that was my concern, the 6500 was sold with a co-axial connected antenna that is the same as ours in concept, with a note that it could be soldered/connected into the 6500 to work. Sound like that's not the case. Will return it. Oh well. Many thanks for your helpful response, it is really appreciated.

I don't know if it helps but, I had a Navman GPS in a previous boat which I cannot remember the exact model. When the GPS antenna failed because of water ingress I recall fixing it by using the Navman’s NMEA0183 input wired to an inexpensive RS232 type GPS antenna.

Something like this may get you started…

Thank you, that's very helpful, I expect we could get this to work with the 6500. On balance overall costs for the antenna, the second hand 6500 and installation (for antenna and cable) have pushed price up to the point where we're now likely keep to the old 5500 and replace with a new Raymarine or Lowrance in the near future rather than trying to direct swap for an old 6500 (fits the same cut-out), which I expect is quite out of date and close to obsolete in any case. Always more to learn, particularly with boating!
