I was wondering if anyone knows whether it is possible to land in Swanage for access to the town. I know there is a pier there but don't know what it is like.
Swanage trip boats use the small stone pier - so sitting on that is not an option!
Dorset Belle 'unloads' her day trippers on the main wooden pier but I have never seen a private boat use it - probably a good reason but you never know.
In season you can call up Swanage Water taxi on 07802 480139 but they aren't around out of season and close with the trippers late afternoon (main business is boat hire).
If you are using th enew buoys laid by Ocean Bay View bar and resteraunt (related to Bank Arms) then they may well have a water taxi in place for 2007 - were planning it last year as their boat bourne clientel increased steadily.
Or of course there's your tender like the rest of us.......... /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
Many thanks to you all for the replys. I could either use a yacht with a dinghy in or a rib to get there. A friend of mine has just purchased an appartment in some hotel redevelopment overlooking the sea so I thought it would be nice to drop in.
I think I spoke to your vessel last year during the big thunderstorm around July 22nd. We offered to assist a sailboat whoose engine failed off Old Harry. You all earned your monies worth that day! - well so to speak. Great link to your site by the way.
Thanks for all of your kind comments on the Blog, I would like to think it is good PR for the institution. If you like it....pass it on!
As for landing in Swanage: You can come alongside the South side of the pier in a yacht but it isn't ideal in any swell. Otherwise in small motor boats there is the 'Stone Quay' for a quick drop off or the town slipways and jetties by the lifeboat house. In a small dinghy anywhere is fine but folk tend to use Monkey beach at the base of the pier or the little beach by the Stone pier.

Yes, I remember it well. I sat in my kitchen watching the world go dark and wondering when our pagers would go off......sure enough, they did!
A couple of years ago I went ashore at Swanage in my tender. Left it on beach and went shopping. On return was harangued by a council jobsworth for leaving a 'dangerous object' on the beach. Turned out he meant my outboard which 'someone might trip over'!. When I stopped laughing he pointed out signs (which I had not seen) prohibiting the use of outboards on tenders beached there. A local then confirmed the bye-law. Whoever thought that one up?. Or does walking on Swanage shore make you blind?.
