Many thanks to you all - and please don't stop replying!
I have been looking into this for a while, as there seems to be a 'split' between the business community wondering why people with boats don't often 'come ashore' and use the facilities, visitors complaining that they don't feel catered for or welcomed and locals finding that after purchasing a boat, they have difficulties launching it & safely having somewhere to leave a dingy/trailer on the shore.
A couple of suggestions have been made (by the local public & visitors - not the Council) along the lines of securing temporary pontoons from the end of the pier and the end of a banjo jetty that is situated half way along the beach. Coupled with new 'visitor' moorings, many locals feel this would encourage boating visitors to moor up, row in, leave their dingy on the pontoon for a small fee and come ashore. Would this be of any interest, and would it make you feel welcome?
I'm writing an article as to me, this seems a maddening situation - the local businesses would obviously love additional custom, and it seems crazy that there is no real 'policy' of welcoming visitors from the sea. I myself went out on a friend's boat recently and found myself 'stranded' at sea as the boat didn't have a dingy (used to being able to pull alongside to drop off & pick up). We too had to tie up 'illegally' to the pier and jump the wall (gates locked evening & night) to get back home.
Many thanks, once again - I'll contact those of you who have requested it, and will post when I've finished the article so anyone interested can read!
Speaking as a local I take it we are discussing the slipway by the Fishermans Catch and not the boat park?
I spoke with someone in charge of the pier a couple of weeks ago and mentioned about getting ashore etc and he said to use the divers steps on the pier as long as they were not in use or the stone key. I appreciate this does not help those looking to spend time in Swanage but I have a number for the water taxi which I understand runs daily in the summer - pm me if anyone needs it.
To all those who are not familiar with Swanage it is a beautiful place (well I live here) and well worth a visit. I do agree that more should be done however it seems unless you are building a block of flats the council is not interested. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif
Hi there,
I'm writing about the comment you left regarding the slightly ridiculous issue of not being able to access the 'seaside town' of Swanage by sea.
My name is Mya and I'm a journalist working with Nico. She's asked me to write an article on the problem for this month's issue. Basically I was wondering if you'd mind me quoting the message you posted, and if I could ask you a couple of questions?
I can be reached at: myaseshat@hotmail.com
I'd really appretiate and who knows? Perhaps drawing some attention will nudge the council into action!
Best wishes,
Mya.
