Swan Lifeline - We can help

Thanks for the information the phone number is now in my mobile.

On a serious note does anyone know anything similar for geese? We saw a Canadian goose at Windsor with a broken wing and called the RSPCA. Is this still the best option?

No you need to shoot the geese.....(running for cover)

Wildlife Aid. They are based in Leatherhead , but have volunteers all over who will collect animals. Nothing is too small.

The phone number is a premium rate one ( to help fund the service ) , but they are very very good.

We have had them at Teddington numerous times for ducks , geese , pigeons , all sorts.

This is a very valid post.

We encountered signets last weekend that appeared to be wrapped in fishing line. After having one of our cats have e same and a hook in his gob I was concerned. The Shepperton Swan sanctuary advised us to check if it was line... or reed. It was the latter. But I am glad we checked.

We'll run for cover together on this one. As a riverside dweller I appreciate all indiginous wildlife and have deposited a couple of fishing line entangled Swans to their Shepperton Base. I do not like to see any creature in distress and will try to minimise or eleviate it within my means, or contact those better equiped than I. However whilst I will offer the same service to injured Canadian Geese even though they are not indiginous, and are threatening our own wildlife, just as much as the Mink are, I and fellow residents break the eggs of nesting Canadian Geese where we live to give the rest of the wildlife a chance.I expect I might be villified for standing up to be counted on this one but the pink and fluffy brigade need to realize that mother nature needs a helping hand on occasions to redress the balance that we ourselves have upset. We do not feed foxes we shoot Mink(has anybody noticed the vast reduction of ducks on the Thames?)We are losing the battle against the Parageets which have decimated many of our Heronrys.

I can't help feeling the Stocks await me - I am ready for the eggs. But please don't throw them at the boat!

Dash300, I am not part of the pink and fluffy brigade :) I understand and agree what you are saying about the geese in some parts of the river we are over run with them. I have also seen a number of mink on the river and know the distruction they cause.

When animals are introduced which do not belong it always upsets the natural balance there is a reason they are not supposed to be there!

The only reason I asked is that I don't like to see any animals in pain same as you.

Looks like we are in agreement :)

This was not a comment against you at all, I was merely sounding off in general as I sometimes am prone to do, it,s is a bit of a hobby horse of mine.
Nice to find a kindred spirit :)

"We are losing the battle against the Parakeets which have decimated many of our Heronrys. "

Interesting...any chance of an explanation as to why two birds which inhabit two totally different habitats and require two totally different sources of food would be in competition with each other.
We normally have a largish population of Herons down here, but this year numbers are definately down.
Now unless those overgrown budgies in your neck of the woods are organising raids down our way to cull one in ten herons ,perhaps the decline is due to something else ?

I am not a Twitcher in any shape or form but each to their own. However what I have noticed is that the enormous and ancient protected Cedar tree in our neighbours garden has had a very productive Heronry colony for the past 25 years that we have lived here.I love Herons. Many people don't for some reason.
They are noisey and sound like I imagine a Pteradactyl might have done but they are indiginous and should be treasured.
Now I must put my prejudice against Parakeets to one side and have no evidence that they are targetting our Heronrys specifically they do arrive 'en masse'and can stip buds and fir cones like locusts within a few short minutes. They are a suspect in my eyes.
However I have seen Crows mercilessly attacking the incubating Herons this year which they have previously never done.My thoughts are that perhaps the competition is upsetting the previous balance. I don't know.
