So picked up an engine has amazing spark and compression but won’t fire just pops every now and then with some exhaust smoke. Cleaned carb was a bit gunky it’s like it wants to go but doesn’t quite make it any suggestions.

Sounds like a bad fuel issue or you are drawing air from the fuel delivery somewhere. Is the fuel fresh and good ? Did you ultra sonic clean the carb ?So picked up an engine has amazing spark and compression but won’t fire just pops every now and then with some exhaust smoke.
