Has any one changed the oil filter on one of these engines? My local dealer (30 miles away) says that you have to remove the powerhead as a starter, and then dismantle that. I certainly can't see a filter mounted externally where it can be got at, but what he suggests sounds like a major rebuild for what should be regular maintainance.

Looking at the parts list so kindly put up by Vic, I find the filter is in fact a mesh strainer. I doubt that is designed to be changed, just stops large chunks getting in the oil pump.
Renault used to use this on their road cars pre around 1970 and it wasn't a service item.

For the ref, look at my post on DF6 Cooling.

Downwest is ahead of me on this. I must admit I did not notice an oil filter when I was looking at the diagrams earlier so I go with him.

At the end of the day do what the service routine in the manual says.
If it says tear the thing down and clean or replace the strainer that is what you do! Otherwise you dont! Car engines have a strainer in the sump ... you don't have to clean or replace those ( At least you don't with modern oils)

DF9.9 is the smallest 4stroke Suzuki fitted with replaceable an oil filter as far as i can see

In Vic's linked diags, it is part of the oil pump ass. To expect you to pull it apart enough to inspect or clean every year is bananas. Usually non full filter(cartridge) engines require more frequent oil changes, as in the Renaults I mentioned above. I would have thought a yearly change would be enough (no manual, so no idea) Is that recommended?
Most similar engines in domestic use, lawn mowers etc don't even have pumps, just use splash lube. The smallest cartridge filter engine I have is 14hp (B&S)
