I’ve got a Suzuki 6hp o/b and since I’ve acquired it it has had its own ideas about how to run properly. It’s been treated to a new plug etc and it hasn’t made any difference.

It will start extremely well whether hot or cold but will not idle with the choke in.

If it stalls - hot or cold - then the choke has to fully out to restart it. It will always restart first pull if the choke is out.

This makes it extremely difficult to put into gear and take off with any reliability and although I have ‘mastered’ it I couldn’t really let anyone else use it.

Once underway it is a case of being very aware and changing throttle position but maybe having to alter the choke slightly as well to guarantee progress.

I’ve searched for info and not found anything really worthwhile. Has anyone got any experience of this?

Inevitably with only me in it the tender takes off nose in the air and I’m also wondering whether the shaft is too long. I’ve assumed until now that it ‘would of course’ be the correct length but I’ve realised today that the previous owner may have been as clueless as me. What length shaft is recommended on an HSR290

Could be the tick over is to low but it sounds more like the low running jet is blocked.
Entirely possible if stored for a while without draining the carb.
you need an exploded diagram to find where it is and hopefully do not need to do a major disassemble of the carb.
Just pull it out give it a rinse in BRAND new clean fuel, blow it through and check its clear, give it another rinse and put it back.

Regards Clive

All of that is entirely possible. I need to get the exact model number for the diagram and I can make an educated guess from there. I’m well used to carbs from my Honda generator so I’m hoping it’s not TOO serious.
