I hope I am not teaching my granny etc. but I have recently found that the only difference between these engines is the amount the butterfly in the carb is allowed to open.

On our 4HP model the throttle cable clamp is marked "4". I understand a "5" and "6" are available. The clamp also acts as a stop for the throttle spindle, hence the different types for different power output.

I have just bent our one a little, giving a little more throttle butterfly opening-as much as the twistgrip will allow.

Will test this weekend on the water, but it sounds anf feels much livelier in my test tank-an old zimmerframe and plastic distbin.

I still have my little used very low hours Evinrude 6HP two stroke twin for sale, S/S, with tank and in excellent condition.
Surprised there was no interest on the for sale forum at £400.00

Anyone fancy making an offer?

I have had a couple of these engines. One a genuine 6hp, the other was originally a 4 but uprated to a 5 with a clamp modification, I inderstand the 6 does actually have some different parts, so that you cannot uprate a 4 or 5 to a 6.

Interesting-differs from what the parts man at a Suzuki dealership told me.

I'm not surprised-the twistgrip will not move enough cable on my one to allow the butterfly to be fully open.

With my little "tweak" to the stop plate the throttle is now open as far as the twistgrip will allow and the stop plate prevents the butterfly flipping over should the cable break or become disconected.

I had a throttle return spring on a butterfly throttle carb at Brands Hatch once-it went to flat out when we were trying to slow for Druids. I had to grab a handfull of HT leads and pull 'em out of the distributor-a shocking experience.

I was able to do this as I was passenger for First Mate on her sidecar outfit. Leaning over the rear wheel and looking forward it happened before my eyes. Grabbing the ignition leads seemed the right thing to do........................
