I am having trouble sourcing replacement washers for the oil plugs (engine and gearbox) on a Suzuki 2.5 outboard. I assume these washers are fibre. Can I just use standard fibre washers from somewhere like Maplin's?

Yes. Or from any motor factor, they would be cheaper too.

If they are copper, heat them to cherry red and quench in water to soften them, then reuse.

I see no reason not to use fibre washers but always renew them, esp on the gearbox plugs, when changing the oil.

My Evinrude has nylon washers.

Sometimes O rings are used but the plug will then probably have a recess in the under side of the head to locate and trap the O ring

Outboards need oil?

Joking, but I have never changed it.

The engine oil in a four stroke needs changing in just the same way as the oil in your car or inboard engine needs changing.

If there was no chance of water entering the oil in the gearcase would probably not need changing any more frequently than the oil in your car or inboard gear box. The only practical way of checking the oil for signs of water ingress is by draining it.... and then refilling with fresh.
