I managed to snap the starter rope on my outboard at the weekend.

Is this easy to replace? I've had a look and it seems that you just have to recharge the drum with suitable string. Any pitfalls?

Use the broken bits to cut a new cord the same legnth as the original. Also use the same thickness.

Take care not to let the spring escape. It should be possible to replace the cord without that happening but you will have to "wind the spring up" almost, but not quite, fully before you fit the cord and then allow the spring to wind it in. You may have to experiment a bit to get the tension correct. Too much and you might break the spring too little and it won't wind the cord in properly.

Holding the spring in its wound up state while you attach the cord will may need an extra pair of hands. Unfortunately that puts it in the the category of tricky to do without help but bl**dy near impossible if SWMBO helps.

thanks. I was a bit concerned re the charging of the string. I will get an extra long bit of string and then when the drum is charged, and led out through the guide can cut it to desired length
