suzuki 115 vs yamaha 115

Models are Suzuki DF 115 vs Yamaha F 155 B. Yamaha are more common here in Malta. Do you think it is worthed to install security locks. Locals are saying that its better to invest in an appropriate insurance than installing locks due to the fact that if thieves target my ob and find locks they will damage the transom also. Views?

Our insurance co stipulated that we must have lock nut security devices fitted and that they must be approved by the engine manufacturer. So I had Suzuki dealer fit them.

Everyone that I asked for an opinion thought it unlikely that the locking nuts would stop a determined outboard thief who was equipped to steal x2 150hp outboards. Apparently the thieves have hiab equipped vehicles and chainsaws to remove the transom, but who knows.

One problem was that the first attempt at replacing the original bolts leaked and they had to be resealed. (I'd agree with another poster that the quality of the dealer should sway your choice.).

Out Suzukis with electronic controls were fine but the dealer service and Suzuki UK were not, so I'd go for the Yamaha.

I have had a Suzuki 115hp in the past and now have a Yamaha on my rib (not 115hp though), no problems with either. I didn't have the choice with either as they were fitted to the boats on purchase. If I was in the position to choose, and perfomance figures were similar, then it would be based on dealer support as the final factor. I would also suggest checking the warranty terms carefully. When we purchased our Beneteau with a Suzuki outboard, the broker gave assurance that the engine came with a full 5 year warranty. They wouldn't put anything in writing to confirm this so I spoke to Suzuki and it transpired that the warranty was actually only 3 years as the engine was a european model fitted and supplied in France. Fortunately I never had to make a warranty claim in the 3 years so no experience with this. They are pretty strict on the servicing being undertaken within the set deadlines, including the initial service being completed after one month (or X amount of hours).

Insurers with both engines have required a lock to be fitted to the engine bolt.

:confused: reading other forums it seems that it is a 50/50 situation. Both have heard lots of praise about them. Dealer of Suzuki seem more friendly over here. The Yamaha one didnt even answer my email.
