Hi, hope you can help with another one of my little niggles... took the tender up the Medina at the weekend from East Cowes to Island Harbour... and it starting conking out by the time we got to the Folly... duely stopped off for a couple of beers to ponder the issue and fueled with dutch courage (real ale to be pedantic), we set off again toward IH... continued to stall so we turned tail and limped back to Eact Cowes after stalling it several times on route.

Got it home and have had a tinker

Carb looks clean but I know I must have got the oil/fuel mix wrong at the weekend when I topped up the tank as it runs better after draining everything and putting in an exact 100/1 mix... it'll now start easier, runs at mid throttle forever but still stalls after 30 secs or so at higher revs.

pee hole is peeing out water, was partially blocked at the outlet from the water pump.

have had a play with the air screw and throttle screw setting.. air screw set to mid way between stalls and the throttle screw, is a bout 1.5 turns out from nipped in... it was screwed out further than that before I had a play?

only other event of note was churning up a little mud on leaving the Folly.

Thinking fuel delivery or oxygen starvation... or, I need to run a full tank through to get rid of the excess oil from the too rich mixture.

any ideas anyone?

Pilot jet settings etc will have no effect ref top end speed
You have a fuel starve or water type prob
The low tension side of the ignition system is working ok
You may have High tension issues
IE
If she runs out of puff or misses at high speeds tiss maybe the coil, plug cap or plug that is messing about
Check too the fuel cap is venting ok that could cause the symptom you explain
Does she just fade away an stall or miss and bang a bit?

all sorted I think... given it some Redex to drink even though there's mixed advice 'out threre' running better by the minute and can now hit top revs without stalling... ill run it for a while longer then syphon the tank out and fill with the appropriate 100:1 mix...... sounds like a 2 stroke rin tin tin tin tin engine again rather than something struggling to hit the revs... happy boater mode resumed :)

all sorted now mate.. tried the fuel filler cap off in case it was that but didn't have any imact... I think this is a simple issue of the engine having its first proper run out since the winter and even thought here no sign of gum in the float chamber, it must have had some in there... couple that with too much oil in the mix and it gave up the ghost... it'd splut splut cough splut some more and then eventually die.... running sweet now so can only presume the redex has done its thing

Run it on 100:1 if you must.

If it will run on 75:1 or even 50:1 I'd use that.

If you do use 100:1 be sure to fog it before any period of storage ( winter) as there just is not enough oil at 100:1 to be sure of it not seizing up while not in use.

thanks both... taking the opportunity to do a proper job as the flow from the pee holes reduced when revving up so suspected something was amiss there too... head off and the water jacket's pretty much 70% salty gunk and 30% water:rolleyes: scrapped it all out and am now working back through the water ways to ensure they're clear too. such a simple engine and a joy to work on

It's worth taking the leg off as well although I did shear one of the bolts trying to remove it.. The channels revealed there were also completely clogged on my 2.2.

I.ve unbolted the lower case off the cylinder block (6 bolts) and was able to turn the leg through 90 degrees to check the waterways.. they were pretty clear and pumping water up from the bottom of the leg prooved it clear up through the leg as I could see water squirting through the little hole amid the channels... the slot leading in to the cylinder jacket was completely blocked though so no wonder the engine was running a little warm:eek
