Sutton marina

How it takes me back! I remember Sutton Harbour when it was full of fishing boats - English, Scottish, French, Belgian.......and the Barbican was the place for real, fishermen's chandleries, plus quite a few shady enterprises and characters. We used to wait for an hour or so after the Roscoff ferry came in and then go over to the department store to buy cheese, charcuterie, bread etc. straight off the boat. The ferry crews used to bring it back with them.

I still have a proper sou'wester I bought on the Barbican - oh dear - more than 40 years ago - when I worked a season at Plymouth Sailing School. Good times! :)

Yes Cap'n Jaspers, that brings back memories !

It seemed to me like they might have just plonked themselves in situ; mind, that was a while ago, DLT and the Radio 1 Roadshow were on the Hoe...

Still going then ?

Still going and expanding . Gone is the little mobile unit but a cup of tea is still only 60p and great fast food .

Yes, Yes Holy Thread Revival! but...

I note that the "£4.90/m/night" from 2015 has been revised down to £4/m/night with a stay 5 nights get 2 free deal.

Whilst £4/m/night is "solent prices", at least it's not "monaco prices". It compares very favourably to QAB where you'll pay only 10p/m less to be rafted out 3 deep in rolly conditions and which only gives you one night free for 6 stayed.

The swing bridge is waiting for a new bearing. At the moment the ownership of the bridge is being decided. The EA say it's nothing to do with them because it's not a flood defence asset, Sutton Harbour Holdings are saying it's not theirs either as it's fixed to the EA's flood defence. PCC have stepped in and offered to pay for the bearing to get the bridge working as a one of payment with no ongoing liability or commitment.

There is a ferry from the bridge to the Lockyers Quay, and the Council have opened one of the maintenance bridges so you can get across, but this is tidal dependent and not available all the time.

With the fees SHH are charging they should be able to afford the bearing soon!

We were in a couple of weeks ago and got stung for £47 a night for an 11.7 m boat. No idea where someone got the idea they’d had second thoughts on their pricing structure. Never again.

3 years ago when this thread was kicked off they had upped rates to £4.90/m in high season which was up from something like (can't remember exactly) £3.60/m they'd been charging 3 years before that. Today's price is £4/m which is obviously expensive but it's not £4.90 any more. For my boat that would be £49/night but for a week it works out at a shade under £35/night. QAB by contrast would be a quid cheaper per night but close to £41/night for the week. The latter would be rafted up with all the dangers of coming and going visitors.

£47/night is obviously expensive for an 11.7m boat, but it's cheaper than £57.33!

True! My apologies as I hadn’t done the arithmetic to check the daily rate/metre. I was a bit taken aback as I’d expected something just over £30. My wallet was still stinging from the bill.

I went in there last week for a pre arranged social event to celebrate 40 years of the Sadler and Starlight Association.
The gathering was great but the marina for one might cost us £53 for a 10.6 meter boat - they had whopped on another 25% in charges as it was the fireworks competition! Staff all very friendly and “free” coffee etc but washrooms though of a good standard had long queues. A very, very pricey place for the West Country
We are still in shock at the prices! Beware!

Ouch!

Memories of this thread led us to moor the boat at Mayflower rather than Sutton Harbour when we needed to leave in Plymouth for a week or so earlier this year.

Re: Sutton marina (Plymouth) & extremely high charges

It’s a great place to stay in Plymouth, but I have avoided the place since being charged well over £100 for 2 nights after not being able to leave on April 1 because of gales after having been berthed there all winter. Short term gain at the expense of repeat trade.
I hear that there are many empty berths both this year and last. No great surprise.

Ah, that would explain the number of Sadlers we encounted last week.
As for a premium for the fireworks, Sutton isn't the best viewing point. Last year, having forgotten it was fireworks week, we tried to get in to Sutton but they were "full". Ended up with a finger berth at QAB right on the outside, one pontoon south of the fuel berth. Best seats in the house for the fireworks. Went to the office the next day and said could I please have the same berth for another night "certainly sir " they said. Had a lovely day at Cawsand and then another repeeat of the fireworks from our premium berth.
Didn't happen again this year of course......
