Survived Tropical Storm Chantal in Martinique

Seems all fine.

Um, 50knots gusting 60 isn't horrific. I was on Para's boat in the same and aside from losing some fenders, nae problems. However, no harm pumping it up to sell those distantshores vids i suppose ...

A number of boats dragged and hit others, some on moorings and some on anchor. It was not a very strong storm - but I think in a bigger one Marin would be a big problem.

There were a number of problems and as you say, not a strong storm, not even a hurricane. We were impressed with how bad it would have been if the wind had been much over 60 knots I think. Where were you anchored?

It must be very convenient to get sufficient warning, while the weather is still calm, to be able to take the precautions. It would take some time to run out all those lines to the mangroves, and lay out several anchors. How quickly does a weather system like that pass through?

The warnings are really very good so we were expecting it days in advance, and moved into the mangrove 1 day before it arrived. We spent the whole afternoon securing in the mangrove and setting the 3 anchors. The system came in the morning and moved through quite quickly so it was all gone by noon.

How civilised!

In the aftermath of Dean 2007 all the reefs were nicely (tho sadly) marked by a boat washed on to every one. I think Dean saw 80-90knots in Martinique

I'm in st martin at the moment which saw nothing this time around. With Para in 56knots we were sailing, lots of reefs and going quite fast...

Thanks for the blog Paul, as newbies to the Caribbean, we've had the discussion of how/what we plan to do (much as you describe), but haven't had to put those ideas into practice as yet (we're in no hurry!) After leaving you in Fort de France, we'd got as far down as Union Island in the Grenadines, so Chantal's passing was only 20-25 knots for an hour or so - far more civilised.

Hi BobnLesley... we're now in the Grenadines too so perhaps will run into you again? We're in Bequia heading for Tobago Cays on Monday (or so :-)
