Looking for some advice on finding a cost effective surveyor in Southampton ? Someone more real than (£900 )

where is the cheapest lift out wash survey and return to water in Southampton?

all help welcome thanks in advance .

£900 is a lot for a survey, but it depends on the boat and what you are asking him to do. A straight pre-purchase survey is £5-600 plus lifts, but this does not include engines or rigs other than general observations and checking that the engine starts and runs and the rig is there and works.

What is the boat ?

Many apply a Volume Foot rule for pricing ... not something I did .. but that's what many do.

Its always been a fact that many of the Surveyors were charging more than you'd pay for a House Survey ....

Whoever OP chooses ... I would always suggest :

1. Make sure YOU are there during survey. He can then point out items ... often difficult to describe in a report. Report is often also used for Insurance .. you can then agree on report content .. WITHIN REASON.
2. It may seem counter - but seller is a good idea to have there as well - but on understanding not to interfere. He may be able to shed light on something found ... show where things are / how to operate etc. It also shows a matter of trust that could help in obtaining fair deal.
3. Accept that many areas will not be inspected due to closed in / inaccessible etc. Surveyors are not there to dismantle boats.
4. Surveyor can suggest / advise ... discuss while working all matters of such boats .. maybe assist in where to repair / service gear. But do not just accept his .. make enquiries elsewhere to gauge pricing. I know of surveyors who enjoy commission or being given parts replaced by person carrying out work ... making the advice suspect.
5. Make sure YOU look at as much as YOU can .. not only Surveyor ... ASK and ASK and ASK ... you are paying money ... make sure you get as much info as possible.

Finally if you like the boat ... step away and discuss with Surveyor alone what his idea of price is .... weigh up against your idea .. then back to seller and decide what you offer.
I do not subscribe to the lengthy bargaining on site ... I'm a great believer in make offer .. leave telephone number and walk away. Maybe one small adjustment before leaving .. but main thing is to avoid that 'pressure' some sellers put on to get their price. If they want to 'haggle' they will call you.
I would also not chase them if nothing heard.

That's me ....
