Surveyors paying marina\'s commision

I have a vested interest in this , but I am not talking about myself!

I have recently seen a letter from a surveyor to a marina stating his prices and stating that if the marina gets him any work he will pay the marina 10%. This is for surveys and BSS work.

What do you all think?

Mike

Re: Surveyors paying marina\'s commision

It is effectively marketing/advertising isn't it?

Unless the marina has a vested interest in the survey results ....

Re: Surveyors paying marina\'s commision

there's a recession on.. business is tough. If I were a surveyor I would do the same.... /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

....certainly cheaper than advertising...!!!

Re: Surveyors paying marina\'s commision

So long as the marina isn't commercially linked with the selling of the boat, then no problem. If it is, then it's a clear conflict of interests.

Re: Surveyors paying marina\'s commision

I am quite suprised at the thoughts above, I thought it was a good idea for marketing but thought boat owners would reject marina's recommending surveyors and examiners.

Hi I too have heard about this and im not that far from you, in fact at Hull tomorrow working on a Broom 530. Seems some local surveyors around us are looking for work.

Re: Surveyors paying marina\'s commision

I don't see anything wrong with that. It's just proactive marketing. What's the guy supposed to do, hang around waiting for the phone to ring or go out and get some work?

Re: Surveyors paying marina\'s commision

It will work, providing everybody is percieved to be playing the game correctly.
The surveyor is trying to get his foot in the door by offering commission, he will need to make sure that he honours each and every deal done, or it could go pear-shaped.
If the marina thinks they are missing out, the guys credibility will go out the door.
On the other hand, recommendation by the marina will get him a lot of business.

I see nothing wrong with that, pro-active marketing, better than going bust IMO
