Hello - would anyone be able to recommend a yacht surveyor (GRP boat) in the Clyde area, specifically Ardrossan, as I live very far away and have no contacts there. Thanks in advance

My boat is in The Clyde. I needed a surveyor a couple of years ago and my marina manager suggested Mike Hall. Within a day of contacting him "he was passing" the marina so called in to take a look at the issue. I subsequently spoke to him by phone and he was happy to give me advice without charge. His details are easy to find on the YDSA website.

Seconded. I usually get Ian Nicolson but couldn't contact him and needed a survey in a hurry so got Teem. Quick, efficient and a clear report with lots of illustrative photos. The report and chat with Tom convinced me to withdraw from the purchase. When I got another boat on offer a little later I got him again and this time proceeded with the purchase.

Another vote for Teem Surveys and Tom... I used them about three years ago with my very first major boat buy. Being very green around boat buying, Tom gave excellent advice!

Do tell?
My last dealings with surveyors were with Maitland Murray and Jim McIlwraith, but a long, long time ago. I have been told there may be very different views of surveyors depending on whether buyer, seller or re-survey for insurance.
I’ve commented on them (him) before on here...some folk seem happy. I was not.

Ive edited this post as it would be one sided and that is unfair.

Ive bought 6 boats and been very happy with 5 of the surveys I’ve paid for.

This all day long. You should consider the purpose of the survey and select (& instruct) the surveyor on that basis. I’ve had two surveys on my current boat in Scotland (the first one of three was when I bought her in Wales 11 years ago). Both of the last surveys were valuation surveys but the first valuation one was probably a bit tougher on the boat; the most recent was less critical on non-safety related issues (50 year old boat) and had a more realistic value. For valuation purposes for insurance you’re not - as an owner - looking to find all the niggles that you can use for negotiation purposes.

What slightly galls me is that if I wanted to replace my boat I’d be looking at about spending 100% more than the valuation survey I got 5 years ago. In my ownership she’s had pretty much everything replaced (engine, electrics, electronics, deck gear, sails, rigging, hatches, ground tackle, safety gear etc) yet the last valuation I got was 10% lower than the worst example I could find on the internet complete with its original 1971 kit. Bah humbug!
