Surveyor required France

A mate who lives in France, is getting his Dutch Steel Pilot Boat "craned out in Le Havre for sandblasting and painting" & wants it surveyed at the same time.

Anyone got any recommendations, for a "a good surveyor on the south coast who would be willing to jump a ferry and come and do a survey sometime april/may"?

Why not choose a surveyor on the spot? They are every bit as competent and would be a lot cheaper than bringing your surveyor across.

Is it something that you can undertake yourself, with a little preparation and research? What are the pros and cons of DIY surveying in France, as opposed to calling in the professionals? ..

Same as the pros & cons of calling in a professional surveyor in the UK probably.

He has professional indemnity insurance if he gets it wrong.

I can only imagine the problems getting any satisfaction in that case, it seems like it is virtually impossible in the UK with a UK surveyor, so best of luck with a Frenchman and his society.

You should expect to receive a email or telephone call within 6 hours of the survey to give you a preliminary report assessment followed by the report within 2 days. (Unless otherwise agreed).

I don't think you'll get insurance with a survey you've done yourself. I know a few people who reckoned they had the experience to survey a boat themselves before buying. Most have regretted the decision.

When I finished my little boat and was going to the Morbihan festival. A few days before, I was told I needed insurance. That requires a survey and Claude Mettrie from La Rochelle turned up the same day when phoned and provided the info by phone to the ins co and the hard copy a day later. Charming guy, when I called him, he looked in his diary and was going to arrange a visit the following week. As I would be at the festival by then, he said fine, I will be at yours this afternoon.

Thank you. I've been waiting a week so far though they do say I will now get the report today or tomorrow latest after a bit of nagging.
