My insurance co (GJW) is insisting that I have a new survey done for them as the existing one is now seven years old. The boat is ashore at Ipswich Haven.
Does anyone have any recommendations of someone able to do this at reasonable cost. To me personally it doesn't matter how thorough the job is as I'm neither selling nor buying.
Alternatively does anyone know of an insurance company that will take on a 29yo boat without an up to date survey. Unfortunately I have made one one claim onthe policy.

Thank you all in advance

Andrew

I would 2nd Domonic Buckley.
He did a great job for me following Sirenia's under water adventure.
He is also a member of this forum and a very good chap.:)

I had insured with Haven Knox Johnston for many years but switched to GJW for the last 4 years. They wanted a survey at renewal(my boat is 1984 vintage).I got a quote from HKJ and they were £40 cheaper covering a bigger area and the conditions were like for like (single handing, night sailing, but not single at night) but they do not want a survey.Usual qualifications about maintenance. GJW seem to have a variable policy about age of boats and requirement for a survey.
It may be worth checking whether they will accept a statement from your boatyard/marina that the boat is maintained in good order.

I didn't like the HKJ terms and conditions at all. One clause in particular (can't remember the number, stated that the policy didn't cover for direct or indirect loss of any kind due to mechanical failure.... so if your engine packs up in the Deben entrance, and you are stuffed onto the bar.....

Another vote for Barrie Sullivan at Y Yacht Insurance.

I have being trying to get a quote for a 32ft motor sailer which has not been surveyed for years as she is out on hardstanding. She has been refurbished throughout and is like a new boat. The surveyor cannot look at her until mid April and I wanted cover. GJW just refused until surveyed.

I followed sailorman's recomendation and spoke to Barrie Sullivan at Y Yacht Insurance and he could not have been more helpfull. The cover is more expensive but the conditions are better and at least I am dealing with someone who knows what they are doing, and can make decisions, rather than a clerk in an office.

I would not have even known about him so would certainly not have considered doing business without your recommendation. As you recommend my surveyor I trusted your judgement!!

If everything goes OK maybe I will have a trip up the Orwell and buy you a pint in the club house you also promote.

I could meet you in the Arms as a compromise :D

I would be launching at Levington before scurrying off to my (cheap) mooring but........................................
Long keel...............no bowthruster....................small rudder

Perhaps Fox's isn't the first place I should visit.

I will keep you informed.
