Surveyor reccomendations

If you want a decent survey that does not miss a thing then Julian at Hamble Yacht Surveys. He was happy to travel to Plymouth and back in a day, and was very thorough when he surveyed OB for my buyer.

Ian Lumley, Lumley marine surveys.

He didn't miss a thing on mine, even the bits on the engines the previous owner was trying to hide, he even knew what was actually wrong rather than what the previous owner thought was wrong.

As he spends so much time in Europe may even be able to work it in with another trip. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend.

Which side of Italy re you buying from?

Excellent recommendation. Very reasonable rate and a flexible approach.

Thanks

You may have even met him, Jez
He surveyed JW for the register.
I can't remember if he did the survey just before we arrived or just before we left.
There were forumites on board at the time - I remember we all helped him holding tape measures etc.
If you were there then - that was John Ross.

Jim Pritchard did both the hull/equipment and engine surveys on my boat when I bought it in Italy last year and I found him a very helpful guy.

However I'm not sure anyone could fly to Italy and back in a day and leave enough time to do even an abbreviated survey. Most of what you're going to pay is for the surveyor's travelling time rather than his time on the job. He's going to arrive knackered and probably not be in a fit state to do a proper job. Its only going to cost you €150 more to pay for a night's hotel and dinner and then you'd get a whole day's work out of your chosen surveyor on the following day which IMHO is a better way to go. For example, how would you feel if during this brief abbreviated survey, the bloke found a serious fault but because his plane was due to depart in 2 hours he didn't have time to investigate it further? You'd probably end up flying him out there a 2nd time. What is an abbreviated survey anyway? I would guess that many surveyors wouldn't be willing to do that. If they're going to carry out a survey, do it properly and stand by their report afterwards, the poor bloke has got to have enough time to do it

I don't mind paying for an overnight stop, but the first survey I approached said they could do it but because it was an overnight it would be two full days at £800 plus Vat per day, plus flights from Heathrow as it was local, plus hotel and meals.

£2000 plus was a bit steep.

By abbreviated, I just need the hull checking, the value confirming and if possible the tonnage measurements.

I don't need to be told how many lights do/don't work and that he couldn't find the switch for the anchor winch. Equipment and mechanicals have been thoroughly check. Anyway, I have found the guy who will do exactly what I need and understands completely.

Its the usual UK market p!ss take at work again from everyone else

I know its a long time ago but did you get a surveyor over to Rome, how did it go what did it cost.
I might be in the same situation soon!

Andy.
