I need a survey for re- insurance [ 5 year thing ] and boat is in Povoa De Varzim Portugal, can anyone suggest a surveyor down that way.

We used John Venner through Bluewater Algarve who did the business and his survey was accepted without question by Pantaenius. However that might be too far away from you?

If you are interested PM me and I'll see if I can dig out his contact details.

If it's for a UK insurance co. make sure the surveyor is recognised by them, a surveyor I had recommended to me by a marina office in Portugal turned out to have no qualifications or insurance!

What are qualifications? Do you mean membership of the YBDSA? If so, anyone can join as an affiliate, or even a student member.

Is there an approved list of Surveyors issued by the Insurance Industry? - don't think so.

For an Insurance Survey why should a Surveyor need Professional Indeminity Insurance at all? An Insurance Survey is like a car MoT - only good at the time it is issued. If the boat sinks the next week - tough. Different to a Pre-Purchase Survey where any subsequent defects may be questioned if they should have been apparent at the time of survey.

So quess we can all do our own insurance surveys and save some money.

I have just e-mailed my insurance company asking for a list of approved surveyors. This is their reply:

"We do not have a list of surveyors. You could contact either the YBDSA or IIMS - both have websites - who has the information you require"

So I, with my Certificate in Yacht and Small Craft Surveying (all six weeks of it) appear to qualify /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

And there was me thinking insurance companies were like bookies, offsetting the bet (premium) with another bookie (surveyors professional indemnity insurance).
And with your qualifications, a stack of easy cash out there waiting to be had, go for it /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

No, did not do it for cash - just for the fun of it. Applied with the wooden boatbuilding course I am realising what I have (literally) been missing all these years.

Even so, if I ever plan to spend a significant amount on a boat again I will commission a survey. I would, however, be very, very fussy about my man (or woman).
