James Green. Advertises in the back of YM and other mags. Lives in Plymouth. Not cheap but one of the best surveys and reports I've seen (on a friends Griffon).

James Green surveyed our boat and we found him VERY thorough... some say a bit TOO thorough as he has a tendency to over report but I would rather know everything and then be able to make up my own mind.

I have used John Merritt for a small job. I have heard that he is very good from others but I found him to be a little unreliable... not returning calls etc... he has that old Cornish/Devon "laid back" attitude /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I would recommend Anthony Head - although he hasn't carried out a survey for me personally we use him for all our boats at work. He is a thoroughly nice bloke and extremely helpful.

Another vote for James Green - you can find cheaper but I doubt any would be so thorough or helpful. Part of the rope cutter was missing and because time was short and I was 300 miles away he got the bit and fitted it without extra labour charge. Also the vendor was pretty unhelpful so James drove from Plymouth to Taunton to look at the stuff in his garage and inspected all the sails on his landing. 150 miles and several hours and no extra charge.

John Merrett did a survey for me a few years ago...

Very prompt, very detailed and provided a good report with telephone clarification of the salient points as I was in the Maldives when the survey was carried out.

He spotted a couple of mechanical issues for us too.

I believe that Tony Head no longer does 'Survey for Purchase' work or the like. I seem to remember him saying that he still does some Coding work. I was with him on Saturday and he is alive and kicking and as cheerful as ever - especially as we didn't let his boat slip in the slings at this years lift out!

James Green is a good surveyor and I endorse all the good remarks people have made about him.
