I have owned around 20 odd Slippers and many are still around the Henley area. Give me the name and if it is one of my old ones I will tell you what I know.
This is from the sales bumf.. Golden Glory is a fine example of an early Andrews Slipper Stern Launch built in 1937. She has the elegant lines and shape of the thirty foot pre war Andrews slippers, with a large cockpit ideal for entertaining.
She retains many of her original features including the original Austin Healey 6 cylinder Tornado engine rebuilt in 2006.
I had a 1937 Andrews Slipper which got sold to a Dutch Boat Builder who did a "Freebody" job on it. It was truly magnificent when he had finished, a positive work of art.
If I remember right the steering wheel should be from a 1930s MG. Did the have an Austin Healey in the 30s? I thought the standard engine was a Morris Vedette in Andrews launches.
It does have a MG steering wheel, as my friend is new to this I have been doing some research and this one does not seem to have the standard engine.. It is a lovely boat, but not knowing about wooden hulls a good survey is in order...
My vested interest is i get to use it in the summer....
If your friend wants to attend the Thames Traditional Boat Rally, just a word of warning. Some of the Slippers that have been restored have had plywood bottoms put on in place of the original planking. Nothing wrong with this and used by a number of highly respected Thames restorers, but the boat would not then be eligible for entry.
Nothing worse than having your pride and joy rejected.
Grant would certainly be able to suggest a surveyor suitably well versed in these boats.
If your friend proceeds with the purchase, he may well find it ageable to join TVBC. A good crowd and a lot of knowledge.
Hi all,
I have recently set up a small craft surveying practise on the middle thames. Working at a prestigous traditional wooden boat builders in Windsor I have gathered a great deal of expertise of the material and in particular slippers (although I can't picture Golden Glory).

I saw her over a year ago now. Don't think she had plywood. Seemed lovely. Decided to go to a more weather practical boat but she was a lovely slipper launch. Will be gorgeous to go out on for those 2-3 sunny days each year. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
