A friend of mine is very interested buying a Princess 50 or Fairline 50 lying in the Solent area can you please recommend a surveyor.If you have to choose between Fairline and Princess which one will you choose.Many thanks

I Have used this chap, Peter Hall, several times, including a boat I bought in Spain a few years ago. He is Solent area based, is very diligent and in my opinion does a great job. Good luck.

The problem with recommendations like this is that most people only have experience of a small number of surveyors, often only one. However if it is any help post 2 is worth considering as he is commonly used by people here. Also the person recommending also does engine surveys so does have more experience than just one off encounters.
Also worth going on the YDSA site as there is a list of qualified surveyors therelisting the type of work they cover, so you can look for one who specialises in this kind of boat.

I have used a number of surveyors in the past.
I usually ask for a sample report for a similar boat to the one that I was looking to buy. In one case, the report was glowing - except that I had seen and rejected the boat in question myself a few months before due to clear evidence - carefully hidden in places - of previous water ingress into the boat. The report did not mention it. Do not ask me how I knew to recognise the evidence...
The most recent survey I had reported a couple of incorrect findings as well as missed a couple of items. Nothing major, fortunately.
I would look for someone with experience in the type of boat you are looking to buy, and clear evidence of knowledge in the areas you are interested in - maybe articles, blogs and so on. Do they have a database of things they have previously found on a P50, for example?
Also, much of the value lies in the engines and often surveyor reports will exclude much of the engines. Get someone to look them over, get the oil analysed, etc?
I would not put much value on forum recommendations where contributors have limited experience with the people they are recommending. Not everyone will share negative experiences here.

Would be nice if you gave us all some feedback on the surveyors you have used in past years , good or bad.
I’m not quite sure what point your trying to make on people’s past experiences with surveyors they have used, it’s not as if they live next door and they know them personally.
Over the years I’ve worked with many surveyors , I just happen to have worked with one more than many of the others , I know how he works and what results they are capeable of making , I also know of surveyors I wouldn’t recommend to anyone again based on experience in this field.

I bough mine using a survey commissioned when the dealer took it into stock.
There was nothing wrong with the survey - reasonably comprehensive and balanced.
But ... in my sea trail I picked up on a lot of things. Nothing fundamental to the Boat but fundamental to my wallet.
Take you own time to go over the boat very slowly and test everything. It took me 3 hours. The dealer ( ancaster ) just left me to it.
Some surveyors may do this. Some may not but don’t ( in my view ) feel he surveyor is a proxy for your own view. It is noisy ? Is the ac cold enough etc. They all cost and once you pay it’s your problem !
