Surveyor in Plymouth area?

I recommend James Green (Sound Marine Services) 07831 435682. He is based in Plymouth.

He did a very thorough survey (26 pages) on my Moody and even drove to Taunton to see the sails (unco-operative vendor) and didn't charge extra. Often recommended here. Not the cheapest but he was very good - there was a bit missing off the stripper and as I was distant he got the part and fitted it.

Another vote for James Green - we have used him and not only is he a thoroughly nice bloke, but he is a good surveyor as well. It was through chatting to him when he was surveying our Sigma on behalf of the person who bought it that lead us to find our current boat. A great find and he then did the survey on it for us.

Another vote for James Green. I've known James for over 15 years and he has advised me and surveyed boats for me. Always helpful with practical advise and guidance.

To finish this thread. I spent the day with Nick Vass yesterday surveying the new boat. He is very thorough and concientious with lots of experience. Being with him meant I had the perfect opportunity to explore and learn about the systems aboard which are considerably more complex than the old boat. A very worth while exercise and I would recommend his services particularly the fact that he encourages owners to attend and is a very personable character. Thanks everyone for pointing me in the right direction.

Brilliant! Nick sussed during survey that my current boat had been differently named previously - this raised his suspicions - he then grilled the then owner and despite attempts to divert him uncovered the fact that the boat was financed by a marine mortgage (a potential problem - if the vendor doesn't repay the mortgage, potentially the mortgage lender could repossess the boat, even after the sale). He recommended at that point that I use a lawyer and suggested a good one (who turned out to be fantastic, and very cheap) who uncovered even more 'issues' with the paperwork (missing bills of sale etc etc etc).

I've just used James on a problem on my boat; he has been exceptionally helpful and is very knowledgeable. Reading this thread (albeit an old one) it seems to me that whilst we might complain that we are poorly served by some areas of the marine industry this is clearly not the case for yacht surveyors. We are lucky to have such an abundance of good people.
