Survey for tonnage and measurement

I have bought a boat that was previously Part 1 registered and has the tonnage carved on a wooden board etc As the ownership has changed and the certificate has expired I need to apply for a new one. The MCA have told me I need a survey for tonnage and measurement to submit with the new application.They have sent me a list of YBDSA Surveyors and Inspectors of Marks. Does anyone know what they will do and how much it is likey to cost ? Thanks Badger

suggest you go for the simplified S.S.R ( small ships register) details available on the RYA site

My survey cost about £80 for the surveyor plus a small fee to the RYA and involved certain specific measurements (e.g. from bottom of center bilge to coachroof) to calculate the weight of (I think "corn") that the hull could carry. It all seemed very odd, but apparently based on historical reasons. While the resulting weight is based on a consistent basis of calculation, it bears no resemblance to the displacement weight - my boat had a survey weight of 18.25 tons compared to her displacement of 14 tons! But if the boat is valuable, I believe it is worthwhile doing rather than SSR.

I cannot answer your question, but experience with surveyors tells me to ring up a number and discuss it with them. Those nearer the boat should be better placed to do a cheap job, particularly when you explain that it requires little more than confirming the ships existence and framing one or two letters.
Make sure you check that the boat conforms the the original registration in terms of engine, rig etc; the less changes the less problems.
If you forced me to guess, I would say that between £50 and £100, at that level it might be worth doing. Of course there would be a transfer (and probably some form of re activation fee) as well.
I have read on these forums that UK Part 1 registration now has to be renewed every now and then and you no longer have the Blue Book, so (unless you have an expensive boat or wish to raise finance) it looks difficult to justify the effort. Other states such as the Channel Isles are members of the Red Ensign Group but operate slightly differently

Yes, just ring a couple close by - the fee is probaly the same whoever you get as the job is standard. Just measurements of key dimensions to feed into the formula to calculate the Registered tonnage. All of no practical use as it is only the basis for charging light and port dues for commercial ships - not applicable to yachts.

Little value in being on the Part 1 Register except that it confirms your title to the boat and is essential if you (or a subsequent buyer) need to raise finance against the boat. Once you have paid the initial registration fee there is a 5 year renewal (currently £49 - just renewed mine). If you only need registration to satisfy overseas authorities such as when you take the boat abroad then the Part 3 SSR is sufficient £25 and renewable every 5 years.
