The boat I'm looking to buy (a 1990) was anti-fouled with some heavy duty plastic'y stuff this summer by the owner. The surveyor is going to have to dig through it to get hull samples etc.. who is responsible for repairing the damage caused by this? The owner has none of the anti-foul left and it cost £90 a gallon.

Re: uh-oh

its a survey innit? That means looking at it or prodding it. You won't find many boats that will pass a survey that involves taking away sample of the hull.

Anyway, the antifoul doesn't have to cover every flippin sq inch, and/or splosh some other stuff on to patch a little scrapy bit. Or tell the surveyor to sod off and not try making it a big deal to get a big fee - almost all boats have antifoul, t'sis job to check the hul thru that.

The Surveyor has to scrape a clear 2" or so spot every so many feet along the hull. Technically I guess you are responsible. However if you don't buy the next Surveyor will
do the same thing. Technically I guess making good will be
your responsibility. You certainly will not require a gallon, a tea cupful would be enough. So say you buy a pint the cost would be only around a tenner and if you buy you will need some anyways.

You're free to agree whatever you like wiv the vendor. There are no fixed rules. So tell im your surveyor will be doing this, ask his permission, and say bluntly that

1. You're serious not a timewater otherwie you wd not be paying a surveyor at all
2. If you dont buy the boat you are not responsible for fixing the paint
3. If you do buy the boat you will take it with the antifoul bits missing and fix it yerself

If argues tell im to take it or leave it. Any other buyer will need a survey too, and there's a recession out there and it's October and cold.

I would say that without doubt it would be the vendors responsibility to make good.

After all I presume you have put down a deposit, subject to survey, and therefore if all is well the problem will be yours, and presumably you have laid out hard earned for the survey.

If the vendor is concerned about a bit of antifouling is he scared that the surveyor might find something untoward, and if he does is the vendor then going to argue about any faults found.

I would treat with caution anyone who is prepared to argue over 90quids worth of antifoul paint, since if your were looking to buy my boat I would consider it a reasonable gamble.

Not surveyed yet...

Ari - I've only commissioned the survey this AM, but when the surveying chap said he needed to take hull samples / scrapes etc.. I was a bit worried that this would mean that the nice new coat of anti-foul would need to come off. However in reading the response to this I see that it is only small areas to be exposed. As I'm hoping to keep the boat afloat over the whole of winter (maybe lifting for February - April only if sufficient reason given) or just for one lift to pressure wash it. I wanted to find out who was responsible for making good.

Summary: Don't worry about it or whilst its raised slap some anti-foul over his holes (not a chance staying at my desk). If the current owner is concerned it's his problem not mine I want the survey and won't buy with out it.

The boats a quotes from another member "Rinky Dink" Rinker 250 Fiesta Vee with a petrol 5.7 - 260HP gas guzzler. 11 years old. It doesn't have an internal shower but this is no great loss on a weekend boat - at least it has a head. SWMBO has also said it needs a radar arch. So watch out for that thread in a couple of months time!

Re: Thelwell

I am reminded of a Thelwell cartoon, which shows bloke holding an axe, background of recently hacked up wooden panelling in the drawing room of a grand country house. Caption: "I was wrong - it's in perfect condition!!!"

Re: Not surveyed yet...

Just make sure that when the surveyor takes core samples of the hull that you have your pollyfilla ready. You can get quick setting stuff so boat doesn't sink when dropped back in water.

I seem to recall from an earlier posting that this is the way to fill holes in fibreglass!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: But did we need him - what next?

There's lots of difficulties yet, a whole sitcom series.
...Insuring the boat - do I really need this?
...Finding the boat at night- is it ok to grope next door wife cos his boat says "Dover" too?

..and then there's shorepower.

Re: But did we need him - what next?

And he'll need advice on what size trailer to buy, 'cos with that big Cherokee thing he''s got it's just right for towing a RinkyDink to SofF.
Then they'll be "where to moor Cannes or Nice and will it be to big for Monaco" and how to convert to LPG and "I've put unleaded in my water tank". What cutlery, where to fit the gennie, what courses are needed and then jfm's favourite ........electronic navigation

Oh it'll run for ages and ages yet
