Looking for an Ofcom / Vhf trainer / expert here.

I'm changing my boat in the week or two and I believe I need to surrender the license. I think this is due to Call sign and the MMSI on the DSC part being vessel specific.

Is that the case?

Or can I just keep the current license and amend details for the new boat online?

While we are on it. Wot's the difference between?? :

'Ship Radio License'
and
'Ship Portable Radio License'

My current one has both on it as a header.:ambivalence:

Help appreciated as the website is pretty obtuse.

Thanks,
RR

The call sign & MMSI stay with the boat; the licence stays with the qualified person. You notify change of boat ownership to Ofcom.

Wrong. Ship's Radio License is cancelled when you sell boat, new owner gets new license with (probably) old call sign and MMSI. Operator's License stays with person. A Ship's Portable license stays with person, if he retains HH he keeps it, if not cancel it.

Ship's License can be cancelled on line. http://licensing.ofcom.org.uk/radiocommunication-licences/ships-radio/faq/759556

Roger, the ships's radio licence with the Call sign and MMSI number will remain with the boat. You just let the new owner know and he can then just do a transfer to his name using the same call sign and MMSI number - the same MMSI number will remain in the vessel's fixed set that you are selling. You if course can cancel directly from the Ofcom web site and then with the new boat you will (if just new to you) take the call sign and MMSI number of the new boat and allocate it to to your name. You should have had a user name and password for the Ofcom web site so you can amend directly. It is fairly straight forward.

no! See above!

As I said above the ships radio licence is for the vessel itself, a ships portable radio licence is registered to you as an individual and will not need anything doing to it. Just leave it alone!

Think of the main ships licence as a log book for a car, you change the car/sell it on the registration number stays with the vehicle (assuming of course you don't have a personal plate). It is then up to the new owner to re-register as he/she/it would when buying the car.

Wot David says! No need to call now!:D

RR was right here to call for an expert, responses appreciated! I mentally read certificate for licence; so now checked my recent boat change paperwork! Ofcom was swift off the mark with my query. I Updated boat details on line including previous owner details, printed the updated licence & forgot about it, assuming I inherited previous owners call sign and MMSI number. Guess what? Updated licence sets out my previous boat's call sign and MMSI number against new boat's name! Good post, learned a lot... Just got to get the blinking radio re- re-configured!

Well: now surrendered old licence, got new licence with as expected boat specific call sign & mmsi number (already programmed in). Lessons learned (i) need a NEW licence when you change boat (ii) Ofcom website easy to use: lets complete amateurs get it wrong then put it right (all during a boring film on the telly). Contributions gratefully received!

Not that obvious really is it? Once the radio is on with a locked MMSI, it's quite a palava to remove it, return it to service for the eprom to be erased and reprogrammed. My DSC Standard Horizon will be staying on the Targa and at this point I don't know if the new one has a Shipmate non DSC or a replacement, it's just a matter of whether it is serviceable or not.

David,
Thanks for your response, I knew you would be up on the latest as it's one of your specialities, but instead of just calling you I thought it might be better to post here and see if anyone else has had similar confusion.

Cheers,
Roger.

Roger, you really don't need to re-programme anything. When you sell your Targa just advise the new owner of the call sign and MMSI number of the the licence pertaining to the Targa. You can then just cancel your involvement and then register your new boat details in your name. If you PM me the new boat's name and current owners surname I can check if it already has an MMSI number. If the Azimut only has an old sailor it is easy enough to get an MMSI number allocated under the existing call sign.

As long as you have your Ofcom user name and password you can do anything on the web site. It has become a lot more user friendly over the years.
