Surly - Shipwrights Arms, Helford

Gawd help us... nearly dropped me pasty reading that.. and no... you would be treated like a returning hero who has been abroad earning a crust and helping to breed the English out from the inside.... cunning devil... :D

I just spat my cream tea all over the wall!

Harrumph , thats nuffink .. Boadicea came to Wessex, drank some scrumpy went ape .. the rest is history!

Erm, you're about 500-800 years adrift mate: Wessex didn't exist before the later Dark Ages. Boudicca (note spelling) would have had to travel through Catuvellauni territory to get to the land occupied by the tribes known as the(deep breath...) Atrebates, Dobunni, Belgae, Durotriges and the Dumnonii respectively to get a decent swig of Scrumpy. Probably did OK on wormwood, psyllocibin (sic) and some wicked mead type of thing, to name but a few.

SWMBO: I HATE your pedanticness!
Me: It's pedantry actually.

I'll get me coat

Aha, you've fallen into the trap .. you thought I was talking about Boadicea of the Icenii, I was'nt ... I was referring to JHR's buxom wife .. don't mess with her!

Totally agree Crap service & overpriced food :(
Trouble is that on the other side is the Ferry Boat Inn with similarly rip off food prices, at least most of the staff there are a bit friendlier. Then there is the Helford River Sailing Club, my last experience there was really friendly girl taking food orders, rude barman who reluctantly found time to serve me & a chef who couldn't be bothered to do half the things on the menu, too busy chatting to his mate about all the jobs he was applying for off the gumtree website!
Haven't been back to the Ferryboat since we were served spray-can whipped dessert cream on top of baked potatoes instead of sour cream. Took plates back and the child in the kitchen thought that was normal. No-one with any sense seemed to be in charge. Pity as we have had quite nice food there in the past.

Another interesting place is Porth Navas SC .. however navigation back in the dark in the dinghy after a few lemonades can be interesting ;-)

The sailing club has been Ok so far this year excepting Mondays when its a reduced menu. Service good but prices high. Agree about the shipwrights and the ferry pub.

I have been reading this thread with a heavy heart. I was born and raised in Cornwall in the 50's and 60's, and it was, and is, a magical and beautiful place. I left finally for England in my twenties, but my folks stayed there for the rest of their lives, and we used to escape back home whenever possible. My experience has been that there is a dark and melancholy side to Cornwall, which can be reflected in service, and it certainly was generally economically disadvantaged, which you only really see when living there. Having lived abroad for many years, when I looked for a place to retire to, I would have happily returned, as have some members of my family, but I realised that the place I knew no longer existed. I'll probably be shot down for saying this, but in the 70's, and 80's, it was almost impossible to find a really good restaurant. Most pubs were really just bars, but now you can't open a property paper without dreamy expositions from those who have discovered paradise, and they have my best wishes. Life there for me would be one long Victor Meldrew moment, as I saw what had been done to our favourite places. So... having made the connection through my wife's folks, for the sake of my blood pressure I'm retired in West Cork, which for me has echoes of Devon and Cornwall as they used to be. It's beautiful here, but there are days when I really do miss my home county.....

Shipwrights Arms changes hands

Just to let everyone know, the Shipwright Arms on the Helford has changed hands in the last week (April 2012) having gone into receivership before Christmas. I understand that it has been bought by a consortium of the villagers and is now being run by the lady behind Vickys Bread for the duration of the summer, so if nothing else you will get a very friendly smile and the bread will be amazing! Apparently it will be closed at the end of this summer to undergo a major refurbishment. Their aim is to keep everything simple this year, but do everything really well and at reasonable prices...

Cornish cream teas have been made that way since before the romans invaded ENGLAND... :D

Not really. Cornish Cream Teas should be served with "splits", which makes a delicious and easily digestible snack. Teas served with scones are a modern abomination and only suitable for the terminally greedy.

Please do not assume that businesses in Cornwall are owned by the Cornish. Very few are, so some the the 'attitude' received may well be from English nationallity. Some years ago, the local radio station reported that there was only one Cornish person left who was resident in Helford. The word 'emmett' is often regarded as a fond term by the Cornish but often demonised by Radio Cornwall.

Mine too. Perhaps one of the reasons why the HRSC was so busy last year.

And the pub on the opposite bank of the river isnt a lot better

BUT ... ... they went bust and the Shipwrights Arms has been taken over by a local group. FFS give them a chance, they might even make the place work ... ...

If you mean the Ferryboat I know what you mean. Expensive, unwelcoming, surly, unhelpful and indifferent staff, too busy talking on their mobile to bother dealing with customers... thinking that they can do no wrong because their are sufficient people walking though the door everyday that they can safely adopt a 'take it or leave it, I don't need you' attitude.

We used to go there quite a lot (2 or 3 times a week sometimes, depends who was out on the water at the time) and spend quite a lot too (normally about £80-100 between us at lunchtime, sometimes £150 odd if another couple joined us on their boat). Then after one lunchtime session of typically poor standard, wrong food, poorly presented, SWMBO asked why we keep going there? We all looked at each other, paid the bill and left. Not been back for the last 2 seasons and that's a shame... it used to be a great run ashore.

Feck em now!
