I have to wonder if this had been attempted on a monomaran, would it have tripped up over it's own keel?

Apologies if this has been posted before - my excuse is that I no longer have time to hang around this fine parish and therefore, don't read all the posts.

Well - not down there, but yes, I have surfed a 30' yacht at 12kts through the water - I did have full sail up and there was a F6 on my port qtr. What it required was careful balancing and steer to the boat/wave/wind and not to the desired course!

But unfortunately nobody took any video of me doing it and it certainly didn't make the news ... perhaps I should've been flying a spinny as well!! ;)

I have surfed mine under sail (17 knots) and power (16.5 knots).

Exciting stuff but if you catch up with the wave in front it's brown trousers time.

yes, downwind from the Fastnet in an AC leadmine in the late 60s. 19+knots and the plumes of spray being thrown up to the crosstrees. Accompanied by a powerful low frequency hum and ethereal choruses from the Ride of the Valkyries.

I reckon a cat, unless kept pointing in the right direction, will still trip over and have the same sort of problems as a mono, when going downhill like that - except it might scoot sideways because of shallower draft.

Keep your video camera going when you try it, and we'll see the results....:)

There's an Aussie-made instructional DVD knocking around on how to take a boat through waves like this. Apparently going over bars in a surf to get into a port/anchorage is a common thing to do in Oz, although probably not as extreme as your clip. Perhaps oldsalt could tell us about it?
