I'm doing a bit of a re furb on my rigid tender that lives on the shore at the sailing club. The rubbing strake that was originally on it is long gone and I want to replace it. I've done a Google search but that comes up with top money suppliers of this stuff. As the boat is worth peanuts its not worth spending that type of money. But I don't want to damage my yacht when I reach it in the tender and I'm approaching too fast! (Suzuki 2.2 outboard with no neutral)

Anyone know a budget supplier? Its the "U" shape fendering that goes around the hull/deck joint. Tender is 9 feet or so.

Many thanks

Yep

Seen Seals Direct. But looks like at least £9.22 per metre (will need 5 + metres)plus P & P. Bit much for a tender not worth too much. I'm sure I saw it on Ebay a while back at £2.70 a metre. But its not on there at the moment.

Why dont you put old thick warp inside cheap polythene tube.
It costs next to nothing, and does not leave black streaks on the side of the hull as the rubbing strake ages?

Fix 14mm rope around top by drilling and fastening with twine or cable ties, cheap and lasts for years. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Replies would suggest Ropes to be the way to go! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Many years ago I had the same problem and fitted some flexible hose - the clear type that has the crisscross nylon reinforcement, from memory it was about 1¼" diameter. Just slit it and snapped it over the flange. I pulled it together at the stern and then screwed it to the flange at about 12" centres. Worked well.

Your local fire station will have off cuts of fire hose, will not mark the boat, light and east to fix.

leave it in it,s flat tube form, fix inside and flop over the edge.

Avagoodweekend......

We fitted heavy coir rope last spring, it worked a treat. The rope came from the local garden centre, its used for rustic handrails.

We fixed it with thin cord passed through holes drilled through the gunwhale every 8 inches. Total cost for a 9' dinghy - £15.00 and looks very smart.

Last time I was in the UK I got a lot of fendering and deck covering from a guy at the northern and the Essex boat jumbles at a very knock down price.

The gut worked for this company

Don't know if he still attends the boat jumbles.
