As we were passing at lunchtime the 55m Pink Gin left making room for the 66m Anatta to move in from the St. Helen's anchorage. Something different for the Portsmouth pilots.

Yes I've noticed that too. Some of these vessels are effectively in warm storage as those whose business is partly or wholly private hire (surprisingly a majority of them) try to keep them pretty much ready to go. No point speculatively heading off off for warmer climes now, so probably here a while more.

A bit of both. There is also some competition amongst sovereign tax authorities to encourage these vessels to stop by with Spain, Malta, and Croatia being obvious examples.

The advantage is basically this: many of these boats are best kept warm to optimise long term maintenance costs and vessel longevity. Marginal expenses are c.25% of total charter fees leaving 75% as marginal profit, which comes on top of the benefits of keeping the vessel warm. Consequently there are over 700 yachts for charter over 25m in the Med (part and full time) and more the other side of the pond. A good proportion of these is in the 35-50m range. There are also tax arbitrage and other commercial advantages to such a system.

Bit like a posh niche hotel, but must rely on having the right crew to make it feel like a home, even if you are millionaire it nice to have people who honestly like you else it’s like keeping up with the Jones ,even being rich must be a constant quest for satisfaction...

Anyone know anything about the huge blue hulled yacht currently moored off Gunwharf Quay? I saw her come in yesterday.

Do the rich need to be liked by the plebs? Surely they just need them to clean and be obsequious.
