Superyacht Al Lusail

First impression on seeing the photo of her is that somebody took a giant hot air gun to her superstructure and 'melted it' somewhat.

The bloke who owns her is 40, has 3 wives, 13 kids, 3 x Boeing 747 private jets, and this wee mobo to play with.

They have been out of range on Marinetraffic for the past 10 days, which does rather suggest that they have turned their AIS transmitter off - but isn't this against the rules, re how all vessels over 300 gross tons are required to have functioning AIS ?

They mention that his old man owns Katara -

And the son's boat is bigger (8514 gross tons) than his Dad's (7,922 gross tons).

I think I prefer the styling on Katara to Al Lusail.

I wonder how many emirs are in Qatar...
There is also Al Mirqab (Cayman flagged!) a regular to Skiathos every August, permanently moored in Athens somewhere which is only 133m and rarely on AIS.
Impossible to miss every summer going around the isle of Skiathos!
I guess being some sort of president/prime minister/king/whatever in Qatar as well as extremely rich, allows for this turning off AIS when he's onboard?
FWIW, AIS was on a few days ago going around south Evoia island.

The problem with these super large super (Giga) yachts is that I cannot look at them and think of pleasure. Now that is my problem which I am sure the sheikh does not care.

The second problem which they have is that they always end up in some commercial harbour next to commercial ships since 99.9% of marinas cannot take the size.
At anchor you have the same problem since you will have to anchor rather outside of any delicious anchorage.

What a waste of space, and dare I say resources.

Thank you sincerely. Since seeing this yacht a few days ago I've been seriously thinking about buying something similar. In view of your comments I'll probably give it a miss.

Seriously though, I imagine being on a yacht is one of the few ways that famous/important/vulnerable dignitaries can relax, travel and entertain without hordes of overt security around them.

couldn't agree more with PYB!

"our" emir of Qatar, with his slightly larger ship, comes to the lovely bay of Koukounaries in Skiathos for the last few years.
So every August for 10days minimum, we have this massive thing effectively outside the bay (cannot possibly fit in and swing around!)
So this guy has arranged with one of the hotels that uses a beach on the side of the good Koukounaries beach (OK wont call it crap beach but it's not got the amazing thin sparkling sand that Koukounaries is famous for!) and he gets a 40-50m stretch on the end of the beach. They setup their own marquees, umbrellas, whatnots and a couple of the mainship open tenders (around 40ft with outdrives) drive the ppl back and forth to the beach.
Further there are a dozen or so undercover security guys all around the area 24/7.

sod that!
