Does anyone know anything about the one that was anchored off Falmouth over the weekend,
Believe she is named " Polaris "

130 metres in length with apparently the biggest swimming pool ever installed on a yacht!
This is a serious boat, rumour has it that it belongs to a saudi prince,
But she was shrouded in mystery,no body seemed to know anything about her, last port of call or next!
She must be the most luxiorios ever built, The cost must have never entered the owners or designers minds at the time of build. Sheer joy to the eyes!........

Name is Pelorus not Polaris, about 115m in length

A pelorus is a navigational instrument that looks like a compass with no needles. It has sight vanes to take bearings.

She is 377', about 115m, not 130m, reputedly owned by Al Sheik Modhassan, recent launch by German yard Lurssen, which has become the yard of choice for secretive billionaires building massive yachts- they are very good at keeping details secret. He also owns a 230'ish yacht, "Coral Sea" I believe, an older Lurssen.

Paul Allen of Microsoft, who had been using "Le Grand Bleu" which moors in Antibes near tcm/Matt, just launched a 413' Lurssen.

Larry Ellison of Oracle is supposedly building a 450' plus yacht at Lurssen.

Other Lurssens of note:

"Carinthia VII", 321', recent launch, predecessor "Carinthia VI also berthed near tcm in Antibes. Both owned by widow of German retailing billionaire.

"Limitless", 315', owned by Leslie Wexner, founder of clothing chains The Limited and Victoria's Secret.

"Izanami" now "Ronin", just under 200', built for Japanese owner, now owned by Larry Ellison (he also owns a 244' yacht in addition to the 450' he is building), the only yacht ever designed by noted architect Sir Norman Foster.

"Skat", 200 something feet, recent launch, owned by original Microsoft programmer Charles Simonyi, designed to look like a naval ship, grey in colour, angular lines, even has large numbers painted on the bows to resemble warship.

Re: Carinthia VII

good info, aswade, yup i can confirm new carinthia is swooning us all here in antibes (am internet caffing cos 36 degress outside and emma is gona make me install the new bowlines if i go back to the boat work work work) very swish megayacht and makes that rubbish junkheap Kingdom look a right mess such that it has skulked off to Egypt till late August...

And how \'bout that rear end?!

(On Carinthia VII, not tcm/Emma! Can't comment on those two's rears ends, not having seen either! :-)) Pretty impressive. The owner definitely was thinking about how she woud appear when moored stern-to in the Med. Looks more like the entrance to a stately home with those sweeping steps and columns, especially when lit up at night. Makes the sterns of most other large yachts look positively mundane.

Wait 'til Paul Allen's new "Project Octopus" at over 410' appears in Antibes this Fall, tcm, that will make Carinthia look positively naff. It's quite similar in appearance, same builder, blue hull etc., just even bigger...

Re: Name is Pelorus not Polaris, about 115m in length

Good info. Le Grand Bleu was bort last summer by Abramovich, the russian chap who just bort Chelsea FC.

I dont know much about Skat but tis a funny name. Either Greek for "shite" (I think, Byron can confirm), or Scandinavian (certainly Swedish and - I think - Danish)for "tax".

Paul Allen used Le Grand Bleu but didn't own. Only prev owner was Craig McCaw of the cellphone company

Le Grand Bleu, foreign names etc.

jfm,

You are correct, Abramovich bought Le Grand Bleu- I believe he's having her refitted and perhaps even lengthened. He replaced the 65' Guy Couach "tender" with a 75' Sunseeker too. Fitting that he has a yacht named the Big Blue and he went and bought Chelsea FC, even if the yacht was named after the movie and not the football club.

I think she was actually owned by John and Craig McCaw jointly somehow although Tattoosh seemed to be Craig's primary yacht and Le Grand Bleu was John's. It was some kind of lease deal with Allen. Craig also sold Tattoosh to Paul Allen after his net worth went from 10 billion to less than 2 billion- about the same time Allen came in and bailed out McCaw's One World America's Cup campaign. My boss almost bought their late brother Keith's new Feadship a few months back.

You are correct re: Skat, I believe she is named for the Danish word for tax. Have you seen her- with the growing threat of piracy facing large private yachts in many remote cruising areas, I think having your yacht resemble a warship is a brilliant deterrent! Didn't know "Skat" was also Greek for "Shite!" Better than "Malaka" I suppose! :-)

Re: Le Grand Bleu, foreign names etc.

"Ownership" is always a vague concept here. They tend to be owned by complex corporate structures for tax reasons. Often impossible to find out becuase many of the registries will allow demise charterers and partnerships to be registered as owners. Those that insist on corporations/individuals will allow corporations who do not have to file beneficial shareholders names. So you cannot find out, unless you know an insider. All very opaque.....

Anyway, as you know this sector, do you know the asking price for Salperton and Georgia, the two sailyboats, both of which have just been listed for sale? I dont want to ask the brokers becuase you have to give too much info about who exactly is interested. Any ideas? Georgia is a fab piece of engineering.

Salperton, Georgia prices

jfm,

My boss has a sailing background, but SWMBO said that she's had it with sailboats and if he wants to get a new boat, it has to be motor yacht, which is why he's looking to contract a 40m build at a Dutch yard.

Salperton is asking 24.5m dollars.

Not sure on Georgia- will check. My boss was on Georgia last year when she stopped here in California, she had just had a refit at Delta Marine in Seattle. His family know John Williams, the owner. His earlier, smaller sloop Atlanta is also for sale. I find Georgia to be a bit bulky in the superstructure, much like many of the Perinis.

Couple other sailboats on the market that may be of interest:

Red Dragon, ex-African Queen, 2002 launch from Vitters, 141' Dubois design, asking just under 16m dollars.

Kokomo, 2000 launch from Alloy, 132' Dubois asking 13.5m dollars

Couple of others may be available but not openly listed for sale- what are your parameters?

<hr width=100% size=1>

Georgia is listed at 28.5m dollars

...at those asking prices, I'd take Salperton- no brainer IMO.

Re: And how \'bout that rear end?!

Paul allens berth (the 165 metres one, first as you walk thru the barrier) is currently occupied by two megayachts. Have not yet seen carinthia 7 from the back, only from side/fwd as going past on the boat - there's no time to wander around looking at boats you know, it's all work work work boatfixing down here.
