Always with an eye for a bargain I was tipped off about this boat by Landlocked Pirate. A portofino 34, 1991, twin AQ41's for £30k!

See HERE!

Is this the start of the flood of older boats coming on the market as owners realise that they really are a luxury item and that with mooring costs and running costs it is better to get rid at any Price!

Cheers

I don't think we need to be fortune tellers to see that the current financial climate is going to have a resounding effect on the luxury end of the market ie. boats and cars. Cars already are getting hammered. Looking at the brokers on the net they are still selling many of the same boats that they had listed in April. (I am looking at the £100k market) These boats are now £15 to £20k down in price. I think anyone who feels the necessity to sell any boat due to the mooring costs has either been very unfortunate with his employment status or else he has got caught up in the tidal wave of lending that has caused this recession in the first place.

It is possible that the older end of the market largely contains boaters who purchased within their means and now are in a position to sell up and move to a newer, larger craft whose asking prices are falling daily.

By the way if the 34' is yours or your mates I hope you sell it /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

It might be big, but it's still a 17yr old boat and I wouldn't touch it with a bargepole - Not saying there's anything wrong with it, but 17year old engines/outdrives - who knows what could be in store for the new owner

According to the owners declaration the engines and drives have had a recent overhaul.Even if it needed new sterndrives there not that expensive
So it could be good value provided it surveyed ok.
Very roomy boat good seakeeping.Looks in good condition provided photos are recent!

I would far sooner own 17 year old AD41s than a pair of those flaky new D3`s. They were far superior in build quality and will still be around when the D3 car engines have blown up or rotted away.

I demoed a 22 years old princess 380 last weekend, great old boat, did what you asked her, in a steady fashion, engines were fine and had had new upholstery, just needed a dame good Polish. and for under £60,000

Do you mean a 38?

If it's for sell elsewhere for 55k to get out of it for 30k tells me that a proportion of that is on mortgage/loan and the owner just wants out of a financial hole, but I'm probably wrong, as always /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Really?

IMHO, its a classic powerboat design that has been superseded by slab-sided jelly moulds that pander to lovers of interior decor rather than the ability to keep going when the weather turns bad.

The jelly moulds (and their overstretched engines) won't be around 17 years from now, that's for sure.

EDIT:- I just noticed that you own a Targa 30. Its a classic design that hasn't strayed too far away from the 3 tunnel 4 strake deep vee hull of Sunseeker and Windy. So now I'm even more confused about your criticism of SS??

Furthermore.....I have a concern that old boats like this will become absolutely valueless. It's not the purchase price that will put people off it's the running costs. If you can afford to run a boat like this then surely you got afford to buy something nicer.

Pete

Eh ? Forgive me, but why should this (type of) boat be expensive to run ? Compared to a single-engined displacement chugger, you mean ?

Looks a bargain to me, even if it needed engine/drive overhauls. What am I missing here ?

Err, why? If its a mechanical wreck, then yes you could be landed with high repair bills. But then you wouldn't buy it would you?

So, like for like, why would the SS be more expensive to run than say your Targa?

In fact your assessment of the situation gets worse coz the depreciation on a newer boat like yours will far outstrip any repair bills you are likely to encounter with an older boat.

Then finally...if you could be proved correct with your hypothesis, there would be zero market for older boats - which clearly is not the case.

Any 34ft sports cruiser is going to be expensive to run. South coast berth £4k, Servicing £1k, Insurance £1k, Fuel £3-4k, etc, etc.

Yep - ANY sports cruiser, so for anyone who can't afford to pay £2000 per month on a marine mortgage for a shiny new(ish) one this looks like a good buy, dunnit ?
