Hi all, my generator on the 1993 Mustique has turned itself into a white smoke generator!

Still works but I guess the valves or rings need doing. I'm wondering if I would be better off replacing the whole generator than spending a lot refurbishing? It's a Perkins 103-06 engine. Has anyone done this and do you have any recommendations for an alternative? Or maybe if anyone knows where I could get a refurbed 103-06?

If it’s running and still produces power AC under load there isn’t that much wrong with it , if it starts ok on the button.
A good engine shared with Volvo Penta . Parts available from diperk uk Perkins dealer . I’d get a compression check and remove and test the injectors first before you scrap it , and check the exhaust elbow for corrosion.
I remember some years back watching a boat owner in our marina fit a complete new short engine for the symptoms to be exactly the same after fitting , as he was about to throw it all in the river I picked up the exhaust manifold to assist him into the waiting trolley to look up inside the exhaust port , you wouldn’t have got a biro insert up the middle, he hastily fitted it back In the boat along with the cleaned out exhaust pipe , it’s still running today .
Moral is do your homework before you scrap it.

Great thanks. I will spend tomorrow looking up manifolds ;-)

Make sure the sea water injection elbow on the exhaust is clear.

Well unfortunately the elbow seems fine - I took it off and put a hose on the water inlet - out it poured. There was hardly any coolant in it though. Oil levels are all fine so it can't be burning mutch

I do need to check the impeller, I guess I should see water coming out somewhere? - it's definitely white smoke though not steam.
I'm a bit limited what I can do with it as the boats in a berth in Spain.
