Sunseeker Apache 45 Diesel repower

Thanks for the feedback. Weight doesn't seem to be an issue in this case as both petrol and diesel set ups have comparable weights. I am concerned though about the reliability of the 7.3 diesels and a possibly significant drop in performance. While accepting that in this instance it cannot be avoided I wouldn't want to limit the boat's use in terms of carrying capacity.

If you’re even considering that a drop in performance is to the extent that you wouldn’t be able to carry certain numbers of passengers then that is probably an unacceptable compromise and will likely lead to regret at some future point.

Out of interest, what is wrong with the petrol engines you’ve got ? Are they actually damaged or not working or is it the petrol munching that is putting you off ?

If the latter then I am always clear whenever anyone pulls my leg about the amount of fuel that my boat guzzles that I only use fuel when I’m out on the boat and enjoying it...... there are so many costs that go with Boat ownership yet I feel that at least with the fuel use it is a cost directly proportional to my using the darn thing whereas the berth, the insurance, the winter storage etc..... they are all fixed costs whether I use it or not . You can buy a lot of petrol for the cost of your engine replacement !

Very good observation Boatbore. There's actually nothing wrong with my present engines. The main objective is to be able to obtain a commercial license to operate the boat. A petrol configuration precludes this. Secondly more economy in operation and lastly but not least a better resale value as with a petrol setup selling a boat that size for a decent price in our market is very difficult

The resale value is man maths territory. The boat plus diesels will be worth more than the Boat with petrols, but still less than the cost of putting them in !

I’m sorry to say that it might well be worth following an earlier bit of advice posted on here and selling her as is, and then buying a similar diesel boat.

I wasn’t aware that you couldn’t get a commercial ticket with a petrol engine set up ? Hundreds of boats with petrol engines are chartered every day in the med in the summer..... Riva’s, Cigarette’s and Monte Carlo offshorer’s the most prolific amongst them.... must also be the case in the US.

The boat is actually located in Malta. Though technically according to regulations it could be possible to obtain a commercial license, all the modifications necessary would make the exercise prohibitive in this instance.
Selling mine and buying a diesel could possibly work out if the timing is right. I have an option on two diesel motors but not a buyer as things stand (
