Hi people.

Maybe this is a shot in the dark, but i will try anyway. :)

I recently bought a 1993 Sunseeker 62 Manhattan with 2 x Detroit 8V92's in it.

My question is:

Does anyone know where the units to control the ancor winch in this boat can be? The unit that controls the +- signal to the winch. I have searched everywhere i can think of without luck, especially in the engine rooms. I cant find it in the main engine room either.

Any ideas? :confused:
 
Whilst I don't know the boat the way these things work is all pretty similar.

When you say +/- I interpret that to mean up and down given your reference to control.

The anchor winch will have large power cables running to it which will carry 24v.

The up down action is controlled by a solenoid ( big relay) which will be controlled from the helms.

This is simply a low voltage cable that will run from the helms to the anchor winch.

There is no need for these cables to go near the engine room.

The 24v supply will have some great big breaker somewhere, which I would imagine will not be that far from your batteries ( few feet?).
 
Yup as Jrudge says the wiring goes like this:

1. Thick black+red cable from battery busbars to the winch.
2. The +ve of those cables is likely interrupted by 2 relays
3. First a big latching relay very close to the batteries, and this relay might be remote operated from the helm or main electrical panel "Anchor winch power on" or something
4. Second a big relay in the anchor locker, with polarity reversing function (for up/down) remote controlled by three thin, low current, wires from switches on the deck and switches at both helm stations

First of all, thanks for your reply guys, appreciate it a lot.

The main problem here is that i cant find the polarity reversing relay, it is not in the ancor locker... Is it normally there or close to it?

I can not find any other relays either. I actually thougt i found it today, but thats was a polarity reversing relay for the mini crane on the swim platform.

I have tested the buttons, and they work. Winch on, and the up down button.

There is no power at all to the winch. In the electrical/aircondition room in the middle of the boat there is a main relay for the winch, this have power and works.

So i assume the polarity reversing relay is somewhere forward in the boat? If i have understood this right of course. :)
 
I very much doubt it. It will to all intents be part of the winch.

It may have its own plastic cover but it is very unlikely is is not physically connected to the winch. To do otherwise would mean more (fat) wires running around the place.

What is the make / model and someone will give you specifics.

Just seen JFMs post above about the relay being remote from the winch. He is probably right, but I am rather surprised. Make / Model!

I think he has right, because the winch has only the fat wires to it, aling with 2 small wires that i think is for breaking when the winch is going down.

The boat is a 1993 Sunseeker Manhattan 62 .

In the three boats I've had with electric winches the polarity reversing relay has been separate from the winch but close to it, in the anchor locker. But it could be mounted far away from the winch without increasing the length of any cable runs, if a builder so chose. I'd sort of expect it near the anchor though, as you did, perhaps inside the anchor locker. If not, I'd be listening for clicks under/above the front cabin bed or thereabouts. There is plenty of space behind those high up lockers around the front bed to hide a relay. If you want to locate the relay by following wires, the wires to follow are the ones from the foot switches or corded remote in the anchor locker, not from the winch itself

I dont quite understand what you mean by mounting the relay far from the switch without increasing the lengt of the cables? But i think the same as you, that it has to be close to the winch. The big question is where :) I have tried removing quite many panels now. Sunseeker says they have no techincal drawings for this model. You mean i should try to follow the cables from the up/down switch and not the winch?
 
Im pretty sure that the motor needs replacing, but first of all i have to find power :)

I have tested it like you says, absolutely no response in the wires :/
 
On my 2003 SS the windlass breaker was in a locker with the battery isolators and bow thruster breaker .
These two breakers were pop out type ,so if overloaded they kinda ( red knobs ) popped out .
For example over heat if the anchor was fouled on a say a cable .
Yours if is the same it may have popped due to corroded motor etc .Basically a fuse which you can reset by pushing in -then you may have power ?
Unless you try the motor -in which case it will pop agian !
 
I have found the breaker, i have the same type as you, pop-out breaker. It has power both before and after the breaker. It can of course exist one more breaker closer to the winch, who knows :)
