I'm very grateful to you for taking the time to get all that information. What worries me when considering emailing these people is that they will add me onto yet another database to spam me.

I'm not complaining about a casual infringement by these people - I have repeatedly 'unsubscribed' using their 'profile' and despite the fact that my 'profile' shows that nothing should be sent to me I am still getting their spam. Earlier in the year I found that they had simply reset the profile to include their blasted newsletters and there is no way to have your email address removed altogether.

With a company as huge and anonymous as Sunsail it is not necessarily fair to make allegations of deliberate foul play - it could be just a cock-up. After all, from reports I have read and stories I have heard of their charter holidays, Sunsail are well-known for cocking things up.

It would be nice and reassuring if maybe just one of their employees or agents was able to report into this thread and explain just what their policy is, and how we can have our details removed.
 
Emailing many of those contacts will do nothing, eg CAble and Wireless and Netnames will be hosts and registrants, and nothing to do with the company, or able to change mailing lists

If you really want to make progress, phone them and ask for their dataprotection officer. If they don't know the name, tell them you want to see the information they hold on you under Data Protection act, and who do you send the £2 or whatever nominal cost they charge to, or you will report them. They will have to respond, as the fines for non compliance are punitive! ONce you've got hold of the name of that person, they will be the right person to talk to, as they will understand the issues, and will be able to get it sorted

They have a pretty bad reputation for generally annoying other water users through lack of knowledge. Though I have to say I have chartered from them with no problems. I did once witness a fleet of them racing, and one of them rammed and sank a motorboat, with resultant helicopters etc. When asked by the coastguard on Ch16 why he was not standing by and assisting, the ramming sunsail skipper explained he was racing! You can imagine the response

I wasn't aware of any of this....when I was first interested a couple of years ago I was thinking of chartering dryboat in the Med before making the final decision to liveaboard. In the end I didn't bother, just jumped in with both feet (best decision I've ever made).

Am I alone in getting all this spam from them, or do people enjoy getting it, of just not complain?
 
why so negative brendan? i host and am the named contact of domain names because i sell them, if some one started to flame me i would soon start contacting the company to say hey there seems to be a prob here, if some one was to email me to say that one of the domain names that i host was spamming i would be under pressure to do something about it.

I didn't attempt to do that - for a start I am holidaying (cruising) long-term in Spain. I used the 'unsubscribe' link on the emails. These link to a 'profile' but you have to enter your email address again first to get there. Then you uncheck all the boxes relating to spam you don't want. Then the spam still keeps coming /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif I have been doing this now since around September 2004 and am getting nowhere.
 
just email webmaster@sunsail.com and ask for the email address of the data protection officer then

Or simply block the emails.

both are quite simple to do, and either will solve the problem. I'm fascinated why you haven't done either of these yet, after the advise given so far?
 
As for 'blocking' emails it isn't quite as straightforward as that - at least not with my arrangement. I have my own domain and my interface is via C-Panel which should, according to all the info., allow me to 'blackhole' unwanted mail according to various parameters in the sender's *declared* address or the header. Unfortunately I have always found this to be unreliable and it seems to cause wanted mail to be blackholed as well. I do have SpamAssassin in C-Panel and this is enabled but the Sunsail stuff does not get trapped as spam. I can arrange for Outlook to put Sunsail stuff into the 'Junk' folder but at the moment it goes into the 'Sunsail' folder so that doesn't really get us an further along - part of my problem is getting unwanted mail that fills my mailbox when cruising and takes a lot of time to download on low bandwidth connections. So, in summary, I have been trying to stop companies whose mail does not get caught by SpamAssassin from sending me unwanted emails.

Coming to the second part of your question, I am not sure what you think the Data Protection Officer of a company is supposed to do. I have been registered under the DPA and know (or used to know) the full details. Unless they have changed things in the last year or so, all I can expect under the DP Act is a list of all the information they hold on me IF I send them a cheque. I am in Spain...I send them a UK cheque and a UK address and a whole pile of papers arrive at my UK address. I pay to have them sent to me in Spain and then what? All I find out is what they have on record about me and all I can do is to ask them to correct any incorrect data.

Brendan, I would have expected you to be more 'fascinated' as to why the Sunsail system for removing oneself from their emails does not work and why repeated emails to likely-sounding Sunsail addresses (not simply replies to the address from which the spam comes) requesting my removal are totally ignored. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
 
You've misunderstood me. You don't have to actually get the information held on you, just get hold of the correct name of the data protection officer. Read what I posted again. Once you've got the name of the correct person, he or she will deal with the issue quickly and efficiently, as they will understand the issues and consequences.

It's a 30 second job to send an email asking for their name, so why not just do it, and solve your problem, rather than theorising?
 
Brendan, I've sent an email to webmaster@sunsail.com and will report back as soon as we get a reply. Over the years I have written to 'webmaster' at various domains and I don't think I have ever had a reply (other than the Westerly Owners' Association!) but, as you say, don't let's theorise.

I was a bit more devious, and sent my email to their HR dept at hr@sunsail.com

"An acquitance of mine is having problems with unwanted emails from your company, and the automated 'remove me from mailing list' function is not working. Could you please provide me with the name of your Data Protection Officer, so we can have the matter resolved.

Thank you"

DP Officer has to ensure "authorised use of data" which is patently not happening here. It was the change in DPA a couple of years back which resulted in the opt in/out tick boxes on UK websites
