Thames Coasguard issuing Nav warnings to the effect that the Sunk Beacon has collapsed about 2 weeks ago. Not suprised it was pretty rusty.

Its the one at 51-49.433N 1-20.629E

Shame, I'll miss it !!

That's a bit of a disaster for us. Now there is only the crossing between the Middle and Little Sunk. Unless I suppose someone has great confidence in their GPS position.

Spoke to Thames CG and they say the only information they have is that it is 'reported missing'. There is a hope that Trinity or PLA will have a look but as it doesn't affect shipping it will not be urgent.

Thames must have wondered what's going on - I rang them about 5 minutes before you did, I should think!
Should be TH who will go and look but as you say, I don't expect they'll rush. Well, they haven't yet, anyway.

In memoriam!

Doesn't look too bad but I wouldn't want to run over those bits!

Of course it never really was a navigational beacon anyway but erected I think for survey purposes in the 50's by the Admiralty.

Surely that means the Admiralty should remove the wreckage and make safe? Stranger things have happened - but not often.

I think they would claim that they are not navigational marks and since they don't mark accepted channels there should be no risk to navigation. Our use of the SW Sunk and the Sunk beacons was a chance thing. I agree it would be nice though but I don't see this Government being interested

I concur Rogers view. I had a longish correspondence with Trinity House (nice man) about the SW Sunk, and they don't have a budget for doing anything about these non commercial marks, either maintaining them, or clearing away dangerous obstructions when they rot out.
If you recall the recent Tizard discussion, they are trying to reduce the ones they DO recognise!
