I've never seen them before and then three show up on our hols. One off the Raz de Sein, another off Belle Ile and a third off Alderney. For those that haven't seen them they look like a flat artillery shell with a stubby tail fin, they are about two to three feet in length, swim on their side with one of their pectoral fins protruding out of the water.

Incidently, these were the only fish I did see, not even a single mackerel crossed the transom over 18 days fishing, some kind of very poor record. Mrs Enstone was not impressed.

Saw two off Lands end a couple of seasons ago. Apparantly they grow to around 13ft? I am not sure where the measurement is taken from, the end of the top fin to the end of the bottom fin I assume?
The book says they are an ocean fish which can be seen at times inshore during prolonged hot periods.
They certainly are strange looking.

Regards.

Peter.

Saw one off Lizard Pt two weeks ago, then two more in Mount's Bay just a few hours later. We circled those two slowly for a closer look, and I swear they were looking back - stayed around on the surface for a good couple of minutes, even raising their eyes out of the water, and then flapping their fins above the surface. A strange encounter with a strange fish.

Saw one off Kinsale last week. In fact it was a good trip nature wise...also saw dolphins (hundreds) whales (three) and two leatherback turtles. All of those from Falmouth to Cork/Kinsale and back.

seems there's a lot of them about. a poster in another thread mentioned seeing one off salcombe recently and i saw one off dartmouth a couple of weeks ago. odd thing was it was hardly moving and we were able to make several close passes to get a good luck.

last time i saw one was in biscay when it jumped about 6ft clear of the water.

Proof that the sea temperature is rising, one was caught from a beach in East Anglia a couple of years ago.
We saw one on a pleasure cruise off Ilfracombe... it just sat there like a plastic bag when we motored up to her.
