On the yacht yesterday morning at 0730 and heard a girl screaming and a guy shouting help. I used vhf to call the barrage but got told to call the police. I couldn't move due to a flat battery. Anyone know what happened?

Didnt hear that, but i had my own drama, i hit a submerged crate and bent my prop shaft on my way to the locks, ,just made it back to my mooring in CYC when the shaft popped out of the gearbox coupling, know any one with a spare prop shaft 4FT x 1" ? /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

That's bad luck Chris. Was it floating just below the surface, or on a shallow bottom. What was it made of, to bend the shaft?

Helen was driving and i was sorting out the warps for the lock so i was up the front and i didnt see anything, but we heard a bang and the engine stopped and just managed to see what i thought was an old crate or pallet break surface behind us and then sink, so it must be floating along in its negative bouyancy waiting to pounce, i dread to think what could happen if one of them fast boats were to hit something floating. But the bay is full of half submerged flotsam at this time of year.

Ouch.

How do these things get into the bay? I thought there were big filter type thingies up the rivers to stop the rubbish?

Hope it's not too bad anyway.

M.

Yes, my first thought also, the ironic thing is when i changed the engine 2 years ago i should have changed the shaft ,it is pitted and worn, and where it sits in the stern gland it is visibly worn, so that is my job this haul out.

To much hassle mat, easy enough to do my self, saw Sunbeam on the moorings at the weekend, she looks good, have you sailed her yet?

no but there was a heliocopter flying around the bay on sat night with a searchlight shining downwards. doesnt sound like the same emergency though - probably just car thieved.

The filter things catch a lot of the flotsam that drifts down the Taff/Ely but in inclement weather the traps get simply overwhelmed and it all ends up in the bay. It was a real problem during the European Water Ski Champs earlier in the year.
