Sunbrella Plus

Interested in this thread .
Although “ Sunbrella “ is the mkt leader and popular, you see it everywhere at boat shows it’s the texture side comments from JFM that are illuminating.
We are thinking about a recovering the upholstery outside ,not desperate just flying kites .
I like what we have it cleans up easily from red rain and importantly morning condensation because it’s a just plane vinyl .

At a boat show in the Med I did sit on some pale , silver and yellow what looked like Sunbrella and it was hot , far hotter to the thighs then my bianco plastic - strange ?

Now this is the perculiar thing it’s does not stick to your skin .
I ,know counterintuitive. But the broker went to great lengths to explain its the same stuff fitted to Bertram’s .Not sure what he meant tbo .
I,ve tracked down the supplier ( via XL yachts the occupiers of the Roma old Roma Itama factory) they are in Venice .
We are still in gather info mode at the mo .Leaning towards OEM as I,ve found them .
Here’s a pic and it’s really is none sticky , soft and easy clean ,wipe down ,none textured for plain bianco .

Sites not playing with Dir pic upload today grrr !!

You can see the softness of it if you look carefully, it not got that taught hard sticky PVC feeling .

Following this thread with interest, I probably need to reupholster the windy in the next year or two.

Am tending toward vinyl again, but interested to hear various opinions

I reupholstered my T40 cockpit with Silvertex including all sun pads. It has a very luxurious feel, doesn’t stain or mark badly and IMO looks the part. It’s a lovely fabric feeling viny material.

I contacted Boyriven - they were helpful but didn't seem confident on the plastic backing.

MJ in Essex
I need confirmation who this is.
I contacted MJM who looks as though they are the right people - Martin Duce - and he did know about the plastic backing.
Very efficient - I got a price from him within the hour.
But is he the correct guy?

Boyriven provided a quick response - samples in the post this morning.
But I think they have missed the point - no Sunbrella samples - interesting fabrics (some with a waterproof backing) but not Sunbrella.

MJM are sending a Sunbrella Plus (with plastic backing) so I should be able to compare.

That sounds like good stuff, I need to get some cockpit upholstery done but want to stay with vinyl to keep the boat 'period correct'.

Do you have a brand name or link to the stuff used on the Itama [ what a fab boat by the way, very high on my 'next boat list'].

I reupholstered the exterior cushions on my previous boat in a Sunbrella material and I recently reupholstered my current boat in a Silvertex material and to be honest I've been a bit disappointed with both especially with the Sunbrella material which stained far more easily than the PVC previously fitted. The Silvertex seems to wear a bit better but it also seems to let water through it more easily than PVC such that the foam gets waterlogged quicker. Yes both the Sunbrella and Silvertex look good and are available in a huge range of colours and feel more comfortable to sit on but as a functional cushion cover material I dont think they perform as well as plain old PVC

Yeah, that's the conclusion I had come to, I suspect I will just be using a high quality vinyl when I reupholster mine.

OK
More on Sunbrella

It seems to me that Sunbrella Plus is the heavier fabric that is used for covers and biminis etc.
Alternatively, Sunbrella have a specific catalogue for cushion fabrics that they refer to as "Marine Upholstery"
It is lighter (in weight) than Sunbrella Plus

We were in the Windsor in the last few days so popped in to a Sunbrella trade distributor.
A company called MBS Fabrics Ltd.
It seems that these are the people who do the waterproof PVC rear coating.

Anyway, after a conversation with Martin at MJM Boats Ltd, he confirmed that these are, indeed, the people who supply the product.
Apparently MBS (trade distributor) sends the Sunbrella product out for coating - so, the end result isn't a Sunbrella product.
So, that might explain the confusion.

Martin has sent me a sample from a previous job.
SWMBO and I like the waterproof rear coating a lot.

So I asked Martin what fabric we should be using - Sunbrella or the heavier Sunbrella Plus.
He is sure that the lighter Sunbrella that is referred to as "Marine Upholstery" in the Sunbrella catalogue is best for our application.
But with the PVC rear coating.

Incidentally, he said that he is doing more Silvertex these days.
Hey Ho - but I think SWMBO and I will go with the Sunbrella approach.

Not ordered yet but I expect that I will get Martin to do the work.
I've only spoken to him on the phone but he seems to know his stuff.

We will be doing the cockpit cushions first and if they work, we will bring the 12 flybridge ones back for him to do later.

@ Hurricane
Yes, to echo jfm....Martin Duce is THE GUY. a little unpreposessing to talk to but he's really good and delivers on time and great quality. (no connection, just a very happy customer)

Yep - thanks for that recommendation.
It is a bit of a faf taking the old ones back to him but I think it will be worth the effort.
I will probably use a courier for some of it but I always like meeting people like Martin face to face.

Martin Duce is as said above THE GUY. He has done loads for me aftermarket and as OEM maker of everything on my last few boats. Totally reliable, top quality and fair pricing.
Hurricane, the stuff in your post #31 is as I wrote above: the plastic backing is a non OEM aftermarket process, nothing to do with sunbrella themselves. But Martin Duce gets it and uses it all the time.

I've ordered it from Martin
I've now got to get the old cushions to him
He seems to have taken my word and is ordering the fabric ahead of me getting the cushions to him.
He sounds a really great guy.

I very much doubt it helps but I have a big vehicle going from antibes to uk in 2 weeks exactly, including cushions for Martin Duce. You're welcome to a free ride but obviously antibes isn't st carles. Return February.

I'd be very interested in sharing the cost of that. I had all my external cushions reupholstered by a local company in a Silvertex material last winter except for the foredeck cushions which I left for this winter. It cost a lot of money and I wasnt happy with the workmanship so I'm reluctant to get the foredeck cushions done by the same company and I've been wondering whether to bring them back to the UK. So if there's space I'd very much like to tag along
