We're thinking of escaping the intense summer heat in July and August 2004 and wonder where around Southern Spain, Portugal might be considered as safe, secure, inexpensive and attractive as a lift-out location? Part of the thinking was to avoid paying the afloat charges which tend to rocket in the summer months, or is/are there afloat options which follow the same criteria, please?

Port Gelves - Seville, very cheap at that time of year but unbelievably hot.

On the whole you'll find that on hard prices go up as to the berthing prices. It is far more uncomfortable on the hard in really hot weather than in the water.

What's wrong with anchoring? That's really cheap. Here's a list:

R Guadiana - Pomerao, Sanlucar or Alcoutim
Alvor
Olhao
Tavira
el Rompido
Guadalquivir
Sancti Petri
la Linea

On the whole I'd advise against as ummer lift-out if you're going to live on the boat.

I always return to the UK during those two months and usually find somewhere to leave the boat for nothing or very little.

Many thanks, Charles. We would be returning to UK July/August and not frying on the hard. As you say lift-out might be more expensive and a mooring up river with a local "minder" would be preferable. We'll keep eyes and ears open for all other tips and info.

I am going to do what you are suggesting - ie lift out June to August in Portugal and then continue on to Canaries etc. Am presently wintering in Portugal afloat in Portimao - although I am home for the moment.
Having checked out many places en route south from UK I believe that the facility at Nazare is cheapest, the most modern and nicest place to be. They have a new 60ton travel hoist. Not TOO hot and much cooler than Algarve which gets roasting! Water and electric to good hard standing and reasonable security.
A price of about 300 euros was quoted for lift in/out and 6 months storage!! Quite incredible.
Guy to contact is Capt Mike (last name escapes me for the moment), he is a UK local who runs marina and acts (brilliantly) as a general fixer and organiser.
If you want more info contact me again - I will try to locate email address of Mike in the meantime!
