Summer Isles / Tanera Mor

I was there 3 weeks ago. Hardly place to anchor except right in behind the fish cages. Very busy place, boats and vehicles coming and going all day, dawn to dusk. Did not try to land.

Anyone been there recently? Antares say they were told 'no landing' in 2021
They were doing building works and claimed it was a building site. Or so they told me after I had landed.
I thanked them for the information and walked on a different part of the island. (I didnt actually mention Scottish laws and rights, but left it implied.)
Suspect all completed now.
As above, not the greatest of anchorages. I only anchored briefly and after the walk moved to other island for the night.

We anchored in the North of the main bay and went ashore for a couple of hours. Walked the fantastically constructed coastal path (all natural rock used as steps, graded, excellent drainage) to the old herring station. There are a couple of beautifully restored herring drifters on moorings there which get sailed regularly.

There are currently around 100 construction workers on the island, which is owned by ex-military millionaire hedge fund manager Ian Wace. There are roads better than most in Argyll, and lots of tasteful new buildings and renovations.

Plenty of heavy machinery, with 4 huge JCBs currently on the island.

Got a sort of tour of the herring station from one of the workers, it seems Wace is also buying a lot of land on the mainland around Achiltibuie including farms, and has demolished/is rebuilding the Summer Isles Hotel.

He seems to be a very driven individual, with a vision that his workforce shares.

The island is a refuge for various charities, the majority (though not all) military. police or NHS. Notably, the vehicles on the island are all various shades of military green.

There is a lot of fingerpainted artwork done by Wace on the walls of the old herring station upstairs. I was told I could photograph it, but not share it on social media.

He has also donated machinery and labour to the hurricane relief effort in St. Vincent.

A fascinating visit. Now repaired to the much more sheltered anchorage just round the corner at Eilan na Saille. (Hats off to Antares!!)
