Summer cruise 2018

Absolutely.
Not that I'm surprised anymore, mind... We are all used by now to expect this quality from scubaman!

What I find most intriguing is his capacity to condensate in very short clips the whole experience of a long trip.
Possibly the best minute of boating video I've ever seen, considering a theoretical "content vs. length" ratio! :encouragement:

You are right of course P, but on the other hand they could also be described as trailers for a much bigger production?! :)

Beautiful pictures again Skuba! Can’t wait for casting off and heading out for this summer’s adventure.

Som sad news unfortunately, the Princess 55 named Quinna next to the Nordhaven belonged to my dear friend Stefan, who also posted frequently on this forum, died som weeks ago after battling cancer for several years. This did however not prevent him from cruising extensively every summer and even make plans for this season. He also made upgrades to the boat as late as a few weeks before passing away. Stefan owned Quinna for 20 years and he definitely had the ultimate passion for the sea and motor boating as many of us here have. Quinna is up for sale now and it is probably the best P55 from that era that exists.

We are starting our cruise a bit later this year, in 10 days from now. We plan to head west also, maybe To Stockholm. The long term weather prediction looks very promising for July at the moment

...hm Quinna use to be one of the bigger boats on this dock, the Nordi almost compete in the ice breaker category :-)

That is indeed sad news. I met him last summer in Naantali and had a chat while we were refuelling our boats. I remembered his posts from years back about the refit and some technical matters some time later.

I also recognized the boat while taking the picture and was expecting him to perhaps comment on it, but alas it will not be. RIP.

You are right, not that the production is that big, but as we go along I'm also shooting a vlog-type record of our travels. As they show the family I'm keeping them private, but I'm trying to combine these vlog vids and the related b-roll sequences and do it so that they would be meaningful enough to share with you guys.

A little update again. We’ve now spent almost a week in Stockholm enjoying the city life. A bit of shopping, a visit to Gröna Lund amusement park, some strolling and a lot of lying around and watching football. Weather has been very nice, but cruising wise there has been zero activity. The marina is very conveniently located for enjoying what the city has to offer (https://www.google.com/maps/@59.3261429,18.0930719,813m/data=!3m1!1e3). If I’m not mistaken, a fellow forumite is in the same marina with a very nice looking tug. I haven’t yet gone over to find out, but will do tomorrow.

Anyways, the sunset tonight was so beautiful that I just had to take out the camera.

Plan is to stay here a bit longer but I itch for going to sea is getting stronger…

Edit: just to quickly add the view from the cockpit just five minutes ago. There was a large Sunseeker right opposite to us for a couple of days and it was a nice sight to look at but this isn't bad either :).

There would have been a few disappointed Swedes around the town yesterday then :(

Thanks for the update SM

There were indeed. Giant screens were put up all over town and people were wearing football shirts. Big crowds also close to the marina.

Pity, they did so well, but lost to a better team, imho. Still excellent achievement.

Somebody commented on social media recently how when the TV camera's filmed the Swedish crowds the focus was on beautiful women, but when they showed a crowd shot for England it was a bunch of very enthusiast, slightly overweight, balding males ;) :D

One could say that if you shoot any crowd of swedes, changes are there are beautiful women...

An overdue update, apologies for the silence. Partly the reason has been that we stayed two whole weeks in Stockholm enjoying the city life, ie. shopping, seeing the sights and even the odd museum. We had a fantastic time.

Once we had decided it was time to move on, it became a decision between heading slowly back home or cruising further west into the lake Mälaren west of Stockholm. Studying the charts closer revealed that if we entered the Mälaren from Stockholm, we could go round to Södertälje and head south to go back to the sea a bit further down the Swedish coast.

It wasn’t a difficult decision and one I’m very glad we made. The lake area was very nice and allowed us to enjoy calm, warm waters for anchoring and swimming. The weather has been fantastic with temps around 30 C the whole time.

On the morning of our departure I woke up early to take care of the laundry and shoot a bit of vid while I was at it. The video shows Wasahamnen (https://www.google.fi/maps/search/wasahamnen/@59.3262087,18.0916577,408m/data=!3m1!1e3)from where we cruised some miles east to refuel our boat. After this we headed to the lock, which unlike those on oceanfroggies pics, wasn’t overly impressive with a lift of only about twenty centimetres or so. The waterway took right across the city until we reached the more open waters west of Stockholm. After two fantastic nights on anchor we headed to Sädertalje for one night (https://www.google.fi/maps/place/Sö...x7cdd1e291856146c!8m2!3d59.195363!4d17.625689).

From boating perspective Sädertälje is ok but nothing special, as the marina is situated between the lock and the railway station. It was quite noisy as there was development going on on every direction. The waterway south from Sädertälje, however, is stunningly beautiful. Country scenery at it’s best with big mansions and well maintained beach houses. Herds of cows at the waters edge type of thing.

We stayed overnight in a small marina at Skansholm (https://www.google.fi/maps/place/Sk...x90ed15dd33055807!8m2!3d59.0481044!4d17.69177) and continued towards the sea the following day.

Rounding the Öja (https://www.google.fi/maps/place/Sk...x90ed15dd33055807!8m2!3d59.0481044!4d17.69177) we turned back to north and made our way to Utö, another party central in the archipelago.

After several days of almost complete physical inactivity, we decided it was a good idea to rent bikes. Totally without a plan we just headed out on a country road and kept going and enjoying the scenery. When the day started to warm up and the hills started to feel more demanding climb, we realised that we had nothing to drink. The only sensible option became to press on to the other end of the island, where there was a restaurant. Got there, enjoyed cold beers and some pancakes and headed back. A blissfully impromptu trip which gave a good reason to take a well deserved nap back on the boat. Holiday life at it’s best.

It was then time properly start our journey back to home waters. After a sixty mile trip north, we stopped for a night on anchor on the easternmost islands on the Swedish coast. We then headed back over to the Finnish side and stopped for a night at Kökar before cruising back to Hanko where we are now. The cruise has been very nice so far and the weather has been perfect.

K, I was half thinking to buy a decent drone after my small toy became an ornament to the seabed of a Croatian bay.
But this last video of yours wiped away any doubts.
Not only I will NOT buy it, but I might as well put my camera kit on ebay, and be done with all that.
Your photo/video skills really put mine to shame!

If you would fancy spending some time again in CF and make an updated version of your famous October 2015 video (which in the meantime became pretty popular in the island!), just give me a shout.
Btw, the guests accommodation in the DP is MUCH better than in the old lady, and it would be a pleasure for us to have yourself, S, A & L onboard. :encouragement:

Well I'm just glad you've survived all the horrendous hardships you are having to endure so far :)

I guess it's coming to a close soon, but plenty of fond memories to keep you going for a while. It's seems you folks from the Baltic are enjoying a great summer as the Brits are also.
Of course another great video :encouragement:

Very nice footage again, thank you for posting these! Weather vice this summer has been perfect, nice and warm or almost too hot for a Finn. We were on a 10 days cruise with Alexandra and day high temps were frequently up to 30 C and above so the airco on board came to good use! We did the traditional Archipelago tour with Mariehamn as the outmost destination. We did a stop in Tammisaari for the Deep Purple concert. What a great event it was, they started with High way star and ended with, nothing less than, Smoke on the water. These already quite senior guys really did put up a great show!

Next weekend we go again half way from Helsinki to Hanko for some cray fish. The hottest weather seems to be still in front of us, let’s enjoy :-)

That was the best boating movie I've ever watched by a long chalk. I won't call it a video because it was more an artistic movie story superbly shot, composed and edited. Absolute artistry and it takes a great imagination and eyes to see, to put something like that together.

Your cruise blogs are simply fabulously interesting reads.

Thank you gentlemen for your encouraging words and taking the time to view the vid. It is really appreciated.

@MM: Thank you for the very kind invitation to come visit you again. It is greatly appreciated by the whole family. I truly hope to be able to take you up on the invite sometime soon. L has mentioned several times that he hopes to see you guys again soon as he has been learning english and would enjoy to be able to speak with you directly.

@AM and BB: yes, the weather has been fabulous. Even if I'm constantly sweating like a pig, I so enjoy the warmth. For once there is absolutely no chill in the wind.

@OF: Thank you again for those encouraging words. I really like playing with the camera and trying to learn the editing side. I have some nice footage from yesterday which I can't wait to edit.

That would be our pleasure K, just say when! :encouragement:
Assuming that the Mistral will sooner or later allow us to reach CF (Aaaarumph! :ambivalence:), the only timeframe in which we must be back home is from Aug 10 to 22. Afterwards, we will be onboard at least till the end of Oct.

Thank you again, P! After our summer hols our travelling is somewhat dictated by kid's school holidays which they have coming up in October, but I'll get back to you on this.

Woke up to this view in the morning:

IMG_4867_zps1cogao8s.jpg

A 47 meter Benetti called 'Africa' belonging to a 34 year old gentleman who has done very well for himself creating mobile games (Hill Climb Racing familiar to anyone?). A great success story.

Apparently they are taking care of a technical problem which means they have to stay at their current mooring. Pontoon in question is of course meant for small boats and is anchored accordingly. F6 winds predicted for tomorrow caused concern among the marina staff, so a stern anchor was deployed to keep the yacht from dragging the whole pontoon with it.

Not an easy task when you consider the size of the anchor and weight of the chain, so a service crane-pontoon-thingy was called in to assist.

Anchoring_zpskxkhoigr.png

All good for now. Luckily there is a commercial harbour just around the corner with proper tugs probably available to assist, should the wind cause problems tomorrow. Hopefully all goes well.

There are concrete blocks on the bottom which are chained to the pontoons. Typical setup here as the tide is virtually non-existent. Problem here is that the sizing of the blocks is for very much smaller boats.

Edit: it’s blowing F8 atm, but all seems ok.
