Hi all

Neddie Seagoon called me to find out if SWMBO and I would be able to join them on Carraghyn for a blast up the east side of the ‘fairest of Isles’’ and a slow meander back to Castletown so we could look into all the little bays and coves along that bit of coast.
Actually we had been hoping for many weeks that a gap in work, time and visitors would allow us to do this, so we just jumped at the chance. My old Freebird would have just plodded along, but the chance to get a bit of waft under us was too good to miss,
The day was just like mid summer should be, even though we are now into autumn, hot, sunny and the water was almost ‘harry flatters’
So out we went. There was a very little bit of a pobble round Langness, but that’s the norm for there no matter what, then I got to helm her and off we went.

It was very nice to see the speed go sailing past my WOT. But I eventually settled for 18 kts. Smoooooth!!!

Here I paced a seagull to see how fast he would go. Well at least 25 kts

Up past Douglas with the harbour radio telling all ship to keep well clear of the fairway as the ferry was about to leave. Interesting to see her from out at sea.

6.jpg

Then a tour of the bay and out again past the Tower of Refuge, shrouded in scaffolding. Big job broke out there it seems, and the on down the coast.

7.jpg

First bay is Port Soderick where there used to be a big café and evening dances, (The buildings are still there but all boarded up). The jetty is still there and trips are occasionally done for visitors from Douglas.

Just a a spit further on before Santon there is a small cove with what is left of a small coaster. Now I remember her 50 years ago, shortly after she went aground there, if my ageing memory is right she got into trouble close in in a gale and was beached before rescue could be organised. I remember sailing past her still pristine lying on her starboard side, but now, a picture tells a different story. Not a lot left of her. And rusting away fast like the Titanic. You may need to enlarge this to see it properly

There were all sorts of boats out too. saw this intersting one

Another little cove, not really big enough to be called a bay, Port Solderick. We crept in very slowly until we were at about 2 metres (How I hate metric. Give us back our fathoms please.) at this point we were about and hour and a half past HW, so at some point I shall revisit it well before and given the same sort of day, anchor there and go ashore in the rubber duck for a picnic. Looks as though its almost impossible to get to it from the land side.

Past this on the way in.

and leaving

Next is Derby haven. And there in the lee of Fort Rock we saw this……anchored another forumite. Satsuma.. TommyD I think.

We are getting quire a group of us over here now.

Back round Langness, with a setting sun now dead ahead.
As we neared the harbour entrance Neddie decided to wash the windscreen to get rid of the dried salt, and during this we drifted down wind a tad too far, so the sun was now shining right into our eyes. Unfortunately Neddie had made the windscreen worse, so it was now impossible to see ahead.
What a photo opportunity.. not to be missed. Stand on the seat and get your head out through the sliding roof.

Just before getting back to the berth I got a final shot of the swing bridge….. just look at t that blue blue sky.

So all in all, a fabulous day, and once again Neddie, thanks for asking us out.

Great pics Drew. Your interesting boat looks like an RLM Entice which I think was based on the old Marine Projects 32' hull. No doubt someone will come along with exact model etc.

This sort of post should be banned. I spent the entire, very sunny and warm, weekend lopping and felling trees, so hopefully the house won't be like the Munster's mansion all winter.

Great photos Drew.

Hiya Drew, you decided to spare my blushes then....

CONFESSION - I managed to soak Drew's other half early into the trip, let the boat slam so hard in a trough going through the race off St, Michael's Isle that the cockpit and occupants thereof took a drenching /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif - still, Drew managed to soak Mrs Seagoon later when he was at the helm /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Satsuma is owned by forumite TommieDee, who was seen this lunchtime paying the price for yesterday's pleasure; I spotted him hard at work washing the boat when I ambled along Douglas quay to check on Ameera!

A pleasure to have you both on board Drew, and if you don't mind I'll nick your photos for the blog as yet again I barely took any of my own.

Re: longjohnsilver

Hi to anyone viewing this post as this is my first on here, so please go easy on this virgin :-)

The "interesting" boat is in fact a Project 31 and not a RLM Entice, although they did share the same hull as you state. My father used to own one back in the early 70's and the same hull was used for the Princess 32 also.

Re: longjohnsilver

Aha, another sucker lured into the YBW net...

Welcome, and thanks for that. IIRC the particular boat in Drew's photo is the Lady S II. I spotted her in Douglas marina a few weeks back and admired her then, so it was good to see her in action out on the water.

Fill out your profile to tell the rest of us a bit more about you, and I hope you'll find it in you to join in the banter more often now you've broken your duck.

Cheers, Neddie

Re: Neddie

Hi and thanks for the welcome Neddie.

I shall fill out the profile but there won't be much to fill out as i don't own a boat...have never owned a boat and unless my 6 nos. come up will never own one but have always loved boats from an early age and read the forums on here everyday. I could be accused of being an anorak regarding boats :-)

Loved the pictures/post by the way....

Cunning stunt Drew.
But the Photo has been seen!

Hmm, having just returned from the Island and made some enquiries.
I believe Freebird has been Re Engined.
Talking to the Authorities whilst ensconssed on The Rock, I was informed that 'Wrecking' still goes on.
This Hulk is not as Old as some say.
Some say it has been made to look Older than it is.

There is no engine in the beached vessel!
Hmm, the plot thickens!

Nice piccies Drew.
Nice Alibi too /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Drew

Great pics and good to meet you and Neddie and to put a face to the forumite names.

We had a great day out in Satsuma and as you can see from your photo, enjoyed the flat calm conditions in Derbyhaven Bay. This was much more enjoyable than the 2.5m seas we encountered the day before at Clay Head!

That buoy we picked up in Derbyhave was not a disused private mooring buoy like i thought! 10 minutes before you arrived we had the owners turn up in an Aquastar to investigate while we were enjoying coffee in the cockpit!

I must thank the Crookhalls for letting us stay on their buoy.

Anywy, thank god the Summer has finally arrived.

Tom
